how long is a P....iece of string? 
Hi guys,
So I've always wondered.... what came first the string pitch or the chord shapes?? is there any rule how stringed instruments are tuned and if so how long did it take to find the right pitches to allow the most chord shapes to be made?? does that make sense or am I smoking too much??

The chord shapes came first...then people started experimenting with string pitches until those chord shapes started to sound like music.
This ancient system of learning chord shapes was demonstrated on "Friends" at the Phoebe Buffay school of guitar. Edventually chords such as "Iceberg" and "Bear Claw" became G sharp and A major!!

It started with keyboard instruments first, I mean the thing with chords. Read about Tempered tuning and tuning systems. Basically first there was modal music, you have ONE chord or mode and the notes or pitches relate to the fundamental drone or tonic. Well tempered and equal tempered tunings allowed for harmonies (chords) to be used that could change from one modal center to another (without retuning or picking up a different tuned instrument). Basically, before well temp tuning, you could never change keys in one song on one instrument.

Cool. thanks for replying, I guess I asked cos I've been playing stuff with alternate tunings again recently and it always gets me thinking about the shapes and chords you get with these tunings. Thanks for your reply Ricardo but the words tonic and modal and drone etc always confuse me I know very little about theory.
