As part of my normal spanish studies I was passed this article which was published in 'el mundo' 13/04/2008. The whole thing raised my eyebrows. Is it true? Why is it badly written? (sorry el mundo), is the guy any good? does it matter even if he isn't?
I just wondered if anyone knew anything of what is going on. If it is true it seems an incredible story!
The translation is mine so I apologise for any errors but the gist is good.

HERAT (AFGANISTÁN).- En su estudio tiene colgada una foto de Paco Peña y otra de Juan Martín, ambos con guitarra en ristre, y te recibe diciéndote que le encanta Paco de Lucía y Tomatito. Todo esto en plena ciudad de Herat, en el oeste de Afganistán, donde los hombres con turbantes y las mujeres tapadas de pies a cabeza son la postal habitual en la calle.
HERAT (Afghanistan). In his studio he has a photo of Paco Pena and another of Juan Martin, both with guitar at the ready, and he receives you saying that he loves Paco de Lucia and Tomatito. All this in the city of Herat, in the west of Afghanistan, where the normal images are of men wearing turbans and the women covered head to foot.
El afgano Mohammad Rafi Payam es un forofo del flamenco, y no sólo eso. Es también un excelente guitarrista de este arte y da clases de flamenco en Herat. De momento sólo tiene cinco alumnos, pero espera que se apunten muchos más. "Todo el mundo que escucha esta música le gusta", afirma "el problema es que es muy difícil tocarla".
The Afghan Mohammad Rafi Payam is a flamenco fanatic and not only that he is also an excellent flamenco guitarist and gives flamenco classes in Herat. At the moment he only has 5 students, but he hopes soon to have more. “Everyone who hears this music likes it” he says “but the problem is that it is very difficult to play”.
Payam descubrió el tradicional cante y baile andaluz en Irán, donde vivió exiliado durante diez años, y ya no pudo quitárselos de la cabeza. En Irán, no obstante, sólo aprendió a rasgar torpemente la guitarra, y no fue hasta que regresó a Afganistán, en 1995, cuando se puso en serio a empaparse del cante jondo. En plena época de los talibán, cuando la música estaba prohibida en Afganistán, él se pasaba horas y horas en casa escuchando flamenco de forma clandestina y leyendo manuales traducidos al persa sobre cómo aprender a tocar con la guitarra aquella música que tanto le entusiasmaba.
Payam discovered the traditional Andalucian song and dance in Iran, where he lived in exile for 10 years and that early he could not get flamenco out of his head. In Iran he only managed to scratch at the guitar and it was not until he returned to Afghanistan in 1995 that he could practise seriously the art. In the time of the Taliban, when music was prohibited in Afghanistan, he spent hours and hours at home listening to flamenco illegally and reading books on how to play his beloved flamenco on the guitar
Con la caída del régimen fundamentalista, la posibilidad de tener acceso a Internet revolucionó su horizonte musical. Ahora posee decenas de álbumes de cante andaluz, pero también vídeos de cuadros flamencos y, como no, guías audiovisuales de "aprenda a tocar flamenco, paso a paso".
With the fall of the Taliban the possibility of internet access greatly expanded his musical horizons. Soon he possessed dozens of Albums of cante, also videos and tabs, and “Learn to play flamenco guitar, paso por paso”.
No tiene ni idea de lo que todas estas cintas y discos dicen, porque no entiende ni palabra de español, pero le entusiasma verlas y escucharlas. Y aún más: como un auténtico autodidacta, ha aprendido él solito a tocar flamenco con una guitarra clásica de fabricación rusa que compró en Irán. Y ahora ha empezado a enseñar a otra gente en Herat, ciudad donde, casualidades de la vida, se encuentran destacadas buena parte de las tropas españolas en Afganistán.
He had no idea what the books of videos said because he did not understand Spanish, however his enthusiasm was such that he watched and listened. He went on to learn without a teacher to play solo guitar using a Russian classical guitar he had bought in Iran. Next he started to teach others in Herat, the city where by chance he encountered Spanish troops serving in Afghanistan.
El proceso, sin embargo, es largo y lento. Los alumnos deben aprender antes a tocar la guitarra clásica, cosa que supone como mínimo dos años de clase. "Cuando ya dominan el instrumento minimamente, les pongo una pieza de flamenco y todos se quedan maravillados y también quieren aprender a tocarlo". De momento hay media decena que están en ello. Todos hombres.
The process is however long and slow. The students need to learn classical guitar first with a minimum of two years of classes. “When they can play the guitar to a minimal level, then I give them a flamenco piece and they all think it is marvellous and they want to learn to play it”. At the moment there are half a dozen that are trying a flamenco piece, all men.
Manuales en persa que Payam utiliza para enseñar flamenco en Afganistán.
Payam uses manuals written in Persian to teach flamenco.
En las clases de flamenco Payam utiliza tres guitarras españolas fabricadas en Japón que compró en Afganistán por sólo 57 euros cada una –una ganga-, y manuales traducidos al persa de los conocidos guitarristas Juan Martín y Paco Peña, que consiguió en Irán, donde el flamenco causa furor e incluso se organizan conciertos y festivales de guitarristas. En Afganistán, sin embargo, Payam admite que nunca ha debutado y que, si toca en público, lo hace siempre en círculos de familiares y amigos.
In the classes Payam uses three Spanish type guitars manufactured in Japan. He bought them in Afghanistan for only 57 Euros – a bargain price – and manuals translated in Persian authored by the famous flamencos Juan Martin and Paco Pena, which he obtained in Iran where flamenco is well supported and they arrange concerts and festivals attended by the famous flamencos. However in Afghanistan Payam never plays in public, only with close friends and family.
Las lecciones de flamenco en Herat cuestan 150 afganis (2,14 euros) la hora, precio que no es para nada económico en un país donde el sueldo mensual de un funcionario difícilmente supera los cincuenta euros. Consecuencia: los alumnos sólo acuden a clase una vez por semana. Aprender, por lo tanto, les llevará tiempo.
The flamenco lessons in Herat cost 150 afganis (2.14 Euros) an hour, a price that is not small in a country where the monthly salary of an administrator rarely is more than 50 Euros. For that reason the students only attend classes once a week. Thus it takes some time to learn.
Payam desearía que la embajada española en Kabul se implicara de alguna manera en las clases y que sobre todo las promocionara, dado que, según asegura, él es el único guitarrista de flamenco que existe en Afganistán. Lo que más le sorprende, según dice, es que los pocos españoles con los que de momento se ha encontrado en Afganistán no tenían ni idea de este arte.
Payam would like that the Spanish embassy in Kabul would get involved in some way with his classes and above all their promotion, especially as he must be the only flamenco guitarist in Afghanistan. The thought that most surprises Payam is that of all the Spanish he has met in Afghanistan not one has any idea about the art of Flamenco.
