What the Heck Is Cabales? 
So I'm sitting here studyin' my cante and I come across this Cabales on the Antologia Del Cante Flamenco. I can't find anything about it in my books or on-line (in English) aside from the mention in Pohren's book that it's "a style of siguiriyas". The tonality is definitely major, sounds really close to alegrias, so I don't see the siguiriyas connection there. Is it just in the compas? After listening a couple of times I couldn't really figure out the rhythm, so I can't tell if cabales shares the same compas as siguiriyas. Any cante nerds got the scoop on this lesser-known palo? Thanks!

Carmen Linares does it to end her Siguiriyas with Gerardo Nuñez. It is cool because he uses his famous low B, high D# tuning.

Thank you, sir. That's what I figured. It is a nice cante. I listened to a number of sig-related palos tonight (serrana, livianas), and that cabales really stood out.

By the way. When I typed cabales into a search engine to see if I could find any info, yahoo asked me if I was sure I didn't mean Cabela's, the sporting goods super-store. Not a whole lotta cabales info on the interweb I guess...

If the cante resolves back cleanly to phrygian, it's probably toná liviana.

Some people will only call certain styles cabales; my feeling is any siguiriya in major key can be considered cabales, including Fosforito's brilliant siguiriya of Juanichi (la del cuco) which in Jerez is still sung in phrygian, but elsewhere is sung in the Fosforito version ("acabalizada" as they say in Jerez).

Do you know what release, if any, this siguiriya is available on? I don't yet have any Fosforito discs and was actually planning to order one in the next couple of days. Thanks!

My favorite Fosforito material is the Selección Antológica he recorded with Paco de Lucía, 3 or 4 CDs compacted to 2 in the rerelease. He covers a very wide range of cantes and is in great form. I'm not a big record person, so I can't guarantee that siguiriya is there, but he always used to sing it...some other forum member can probably confirm if it's there. In any case, you won't go wrong with this double CD, and Paco's accompaniment is perfect.

Thank you, Estela. Dang, it's a bit pricey bu that does look like a very solid release. Flamenco Connection sez "it's practically an encyclopedia of Flamenco forms", so this is probably the one to get.

Between Mairena and Fosforito it's practically everything you need to know about flamenco, they laid it all out for us.

You'll never regret making the investment...look at it this way, they are hardly any good cante recordings made any more, so this expense can represent what you won't buy next year.

Well, tomorrow's payday, and I was already planing to order the Magna Antologia, so I'm not too shy about dropping some serious cash for this stuff. I should just start signing my checks over to Flamenco Connection.

If you are into dropping some money for flamenco cante, I recommend the latest DVD remasters of Rito y Geografia del Cante. The box sets that include books. They sell them individual also w/out the books, but the books are really cool IMO.

Ricardo: Yep. Already at the very top of my list. I've been eying that full collection, but those four disc sets look pretty good, and a lot easier on the wallet. Now I just gotta pick which volume to start with...

Those Puro Y Jondo discs look pretty good, too, if less definitive. There's a very modestly priced box set availabe, so that might be my next big purchase...

Is there a "miners song" version of the siguiriyas? If the cantes like cartageneras,tarantas and Mineras etc developed in a certain place why wouldn´t the other cantes like solea, bulerias, siguiriyas picked up influences from that territory?

any siguiryas developed by singers from lets say Almeria and that "mineing" area.

I don't think so. But Serrana uses the compas of Siguiryas and has very colorful melody, closer to a malagueña type thing than a modal siguiryas/martinete type melody. Listen some Serranas if you can, and other mountain songs from the sierra.
