And the flamenco Grammy goes to....

Ojos De Brujo. Now I like this band's funky, punky, Spanish latino brand of music but I find it very sad when it wins what should or could be a prestigious flamenco award.

I'm fascinated to hear their version of " Get Up Stand Up" by Bob Marley. Emilio Maya once did a flamenco version on of " I Shot the Sherriff" This stuff is all fun but it is not flamenco and teh excuse that this will bring new audiences to the real stuff cuts no ice, as the real stuff will only be available on recordings as the artists are sitting at home twiddlng their thumbs from lack of work.

Taller de Compás, the group of very young flamenco percussionists we recorded were their support group on a few occasions and depite the supposed political stance of Ojos De Brujo, ie solidarity, social awareness etc. I felt very let down ( OK pretty much outraged) when the band were not paid, not even expenses or a meal, in fact were asked to leave the dressing room when Ojos De Brujo arrived and told to change in the public toilets. So they were were 9 of us in a two cubicle smelly toilet, trying to get everyone ready while on stage the backdrop showed pictures of poor Gitanos living in slums and the singer shouted about oppression and how we should all pull together, one world, one love etc. etc.

Morning rant over !!!

Yeah I agree. I've got a couple of their albums and I enjoy listening to them occasionally, but they shouldn't win this award. It's good party music.

It's an argument often used tho. With respect to Emilio's cover version, I just don't enjoy this sort of stuff. I know it's said that REAL flamenco is too scary for the uninitiated, but I don't see that making popular tunes into flamenco makes it more approachable.

I'm shocked - really. And disappointed that this should happen.

Yes the band leader used it in his acceptance speech.

My choice from the nominees would have been Son de la Frontera. They are playing here in Granada on 6 December which I'm looking forward to. Saw then in Jerez and they brought the house down, actually it was a sherry warehouse.
