Marcelo Sousa video (Peña Duende)

Hi everyone,

The folks at Peña Duende have uploaded to their website a video of the singer Marcelo Sousa and the house guitarist Pepe Núñez. Marcelo's going to be singing there next week because the zambomba (Christmas party) fell through that they'd planned with the Agujetas clan.

Here's the URL:
http://www.kanalduende.com/

It's all in Spanish, but if you scroll down a bit, you'll see a link to "Video de Marcelo Sousa."

Rather than bombarding you with advertising for this place, my intention is to let you know that at least once a month you'll be able to see footage of accomplished singers with an excellent guitarist (Pepe). I was a little surprised that there was no reaction to my last post, and I thought that maybe people hadn't noticed the video link. Apparently, they're going to keep adding videos of scheduled artists, so there should be a different video after Marcelo's performance next week. If not, at some point in January, there should be more material available. Just scroll down and look for the link "Video de...."

By the way, I'd mentioned that the admission was something like 15 euros and I see that it's actually 12 euros.

Great peña, be sure to go there if you're in Madrid, etc. I won't be posting like this anymore if you think it's abusive.

Hi Norman,
I'm not a great fan of Guajiras, but I do like the atmosphere of the peña!
Will tune into their other stuff as it appears.

Do you live in Madrid?
Which area?

cheers,

Ron

Don't be crazy, it's not abusive at all - it's sharing stuff that's going on!! I'm hoping to go to Madrid next year so I'll be asking advice about where to go.

Unlike Ron I love Guajiras, and there are a few of us closet Guajiras lovers on the Foro (c'mon out Kev, I know you're there ) That guy was fantastic, no wonder the crowd loved him.

Hi everyone,

Glad to know that the Peña Duende posts aren't bothering anyone. I didn't think it was such a bad thing, but Internet forums are strange places. By the way, I'm impressed with the good intentions, sense of humor and diversity of this forum. The thread on lurkers is fascinating, although a little daunting. Brings out the best and worst in everyone!

Anyway:

Marcelo is a real all-terrain vehicle, and guajiras is one of his specialties. The vast majority of the singers that perform at the peña are asked to do at least one siguiriya or tonás. All the singers are acknowledged professionals, although some are just starting out, and they're contracted weeks/months beforehand, so there aren't any spontaneous performances from overenthusiastic members of the audience, which is what some people in Madrid imagine when they hear the word peña. The format is usually four cantes, intermission and another four cantes, all within the most commonly heard styles (tangos, Levante, cantiñas, fandangos, soleá, etc.) You'll hear guajiras, colombianas, rumbas, cantes de trilla, etc. very rarely. It's a demanding yet warm environment (just be sure to sit near the heater in the winter, brrr). I lived in Madrid for 20 years, the last seven or eight up in the north-east corner of the city (Hortaleza). My neighbor and best buddy Luis is the one who films this stuff. I spent nearly a year trying to find this peña and was a regular there for my last four or five years in Madrid, and now I'm in Jerez.

Thanks, sharing was my intention, although I also enjoy being crazy Just let me know before your trip and and I'll tell you about a few places to go to. They're both very good artists that have been performing together at this peña for a number of years now. Marcelo's brother is also a hell of a singer, although he's lost his voice (sounds like a combination of José Cepero and Agujetas Viejo), and his nephew Antonio Ronco is one of my favorites, although I think he's not performing as much as he used to.

Glad you enjoyed it!

As I mentioned in my first post about this peña, Pepe Núñez is an outstanding accompanist. In my opinion, these videos will offer some very interesting material for the forum.
