Pepe Haro

Several years ago I had the pleasure of studying quite a bit with Pepe Haro when he was living in California. He is a very good player and a great guy. He's been back in Spain for a number of years and has some recordings and pics on his my space page that show he's been doing some good things. Check it out, he's a great guy and a really good teacher as well.

I got to play with him in a concert along with some top jazz musicians. He put on a really good concert in that he presented solos, a group with the jazz guys, played a little for dance, and he even sang a bit. It was funny, he had to go back to Spain a few weeks before the concert and couldn't promote it at all. We were warming up backstage and he asked me to look into the theatre to see if anyone showed up. It was standing room only. He was crafty in his selection of musicians-he didn't have fusion guys, but hard core jazz men, and it blended well with his style.

As a teacher, he really helped show me where some of my problem areas were as a player and how to study to correct them. He also had some very interesting observations about flamenco in the US. Great sense of humor too. Just a cool character.
