Flamenco Ukulele

Believe it or not, I am taking a serious effort to learn flamenco for the ukulele. Playing normally only my own solo compositions, I am broadening my base with jazz, classical and flamenco currently.

Along with my solo compositiong, I am learning several jazz standards, classical pieces like Vivaldi's Concerto in C, esoteric peices such as Rimsky Korsakov's flight of the bumblebee, Hawaiian songs and some 20th century works...and, hopefully broadening my skill set to incorporate a serious study of flamenco music. All, on the ukulele.

Currently I have only composed some stuff with basic flamenco chord progressions and styles, but what I was looking for was the names of some of the top solo guitar flamenco players such that I could get CD's and the likes. Any feedback is appreciated

I apoligize that no one on our site has so far seen fit to answer you. Our top solo guitar players are Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook, and Israel Ka'waina'kamole.

Just kidding! I thought it would be cool to pick up the uke for doing solos in group settings, almost like a requinto. Are you from Hawaii?

The top solo player is Paco de Lucia, after that the order is debatable, but Vicente Amigo and Tomatito are popular and indisputably great. Going back in time, you should probably check out at least Sabicas, a virtuoso with beautifully clean technique. Good luck.

A couple of weeks ago I heard a report on BBC Radio 4 News about the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, who were about to perform at a sell out concert in London.
Man, these guys are GOOD!
They play all sorts of stuff, Jazz, Classical, Rock, Punk, Rap, Reggae etc etc.
One of the members said "Basically the Ukulele is a **** detector. If you can play it on the Ukulele and it sounds good, then it is truly a good tune." LOL!

To Guest, I would investigate the Flamenco form "Guajiras" which I think would work well with the instrument, especially a group of instruments IMO.

HI, be sure you send something up here when you manage to play something flamenco!

Right so I registered on the forum now. Thanks for those links guys, both look promising.

Incidentally I am currently working on recording Albeniz's asturias - leyenda on the ukulele, figuring it out from a recording by Paco de Lucia (who IS very good, thanks for tip off on him miguel de maria)
