RE: Gateway to Rhythm (in reply to Ricardo)

I've never heard of Konokol before, but a percussion teacher of mine used to teach new rhythms by getting us to vocalise. Only when we could speak the rhythms, were we allowed to pick up drums, and try to reproduce the rhythm we were speaking. It worked amazingly well - once the rhythm was in our heads, we could play it very quickly. Another teacher of mine taught us complex rhythms by putting silly words to the overall rhythm. Then each drummer would learn which words they played on. Here's a very daft one - I've tried to give the counting, but it's a bit difficult to represent. (1)--2---------------3-----------4 ------Guiness and stout, Barman, --------5-----------6---------------7-----------8-----------1 and a packet of crisps, packet of crisps, packet of crisps, --------2------------3-----------------4----------(5) and a Bud and a snakebite and black. --------6------7-------------8---------- Hurry up Barman, hurry up please. Well it made us laugh anyway. Words rather give the impression we liked a drink tho.
