Sanlúcar magic

Hola

Yesterday some 50 organisers and aficionados met in the Peña Puerto Lucero in Sanlúcar for a homenaje to an incredible woman, Encarna Marin Sallago "La Sallago", soon to celebrate her 89th birthday and the greatest-ever singer from Sanlùcar. She was presented with flowers, the insignia de oro de la Peña and a boxed set of her recordings. We all had the opportunity to buy a CD specially compiled for the occasion and she was ready to sign them all with a smile.

Still bright and lively, she captivated everyone with some great fandangos and bulerías: when she called for a table on which to play compas during her bulerias, it was a moment muy especial. Fernando de la Morena, Carmen de la Jara and a couple of young cantaoras de Sanlúcar also sang in her honour, all accompanied by the guitar of Antonio Higuero.

Held in a fine and friendly Peña, with great tapas and manzanilla, it was one of those rare magical moments of flamenco that can never be forgotten.

Suerte

Shoot just missed you by a few days there Sean. Myself and others were in that same Peña on Wednsday. Certainly a magical place for flamenco. Whatever happend to Maria Vargas? She was a favorite of mine from Sanlucar also.

I have often wondered: she is sensational. I have a CD and saw her once live. I asked around and was told that she married a very rich ganadero and retired from singing to live in luxury

Hope you tried their croquetas de puchero: I thought their tapas were good though I never liked Solear manzanilla. A great Peña, though.
