cuerda pelá

Hi, I am new to the list and to computers in general. I play some
guitar, and have been for awhile.. but I would not say I am "a
guitarist." But, I love flamenco and I am enjoying reading about it.

I am currently enjoying reading the guitar section in a book called
'lives and legends of flamenco' by Donald Pohren. It has been around
for awhile and probably many of you are familiar with it and might
even enjoy it as much as I do.

I am intrigued by a guitar technique Pohren describes as cuerda pelá
of the old style playing he describes such as Paco el Barbero. Does
anyone know exactly what cuerda pelá actually is on the guitar? Is it
just the pulgar (thumb) or is it P-i... or what? Its not really clear
to me.

Gracias,
Reyes

Hola Reyes,

I'm kate, I see you found us here. I answered this on another forum but will say it again in case you missed it. The guitar players here will probably help a lot more though.

The Cuerda pelá was created by Paco de Lucena and is a style of picking with the thumb. This style passed to Niño de Morón who passed it to Pepe Naranjo who taught Diego del Gastor which is where Don Pohren would have heard it.
