Yamaha and $350

I played one of these at the evil empire (Guitar Center) yesterday. All the things I had been practicing and learning on my classical (I won't mention the brand, I can hear the laugher through cyber space) sounded much better and the rudimetary runs were much easier to make. I really liked it.

For the $350, can I do any better? I gather that the next step is $750 range to hear any real difference or just save more and hit the $1500 range after learning much more. Am I correct? I just want some input.

I am really playing more flamenco-esque guitar, timewise, than I ever did with my electric. I am learning much more in this style and this style seems to augment the things I was taught as a teen. But the higher priced guitar will just have to wait until my son goes to public schools. I just need to keep that cash on reserve right now. Will my $350 be well spent?

its a really nifty guitar the yamaha 171sf. despite it not being a real spanish guitar (i think its made in taiwan), it has a great tone to it. it still a surprise to me when i pick it up and shred a loud ass buleria in my empty hallway

Yes, it's definitly well spent, and a lot of how a guitar plays depends on how you feel. I remember a comercial on television, though I don't watch a lot of television, that showed an old beat up guitar, and then a maestro playing the flamenco, and a voice came on and said, 'it's not so much the guitar, but the maestro who is playing it.' That always stayed in my mind though I don't quite remember what it was that they were advertising. If the guitar makes you feel good and it's not the absolute best, buy it and play it for no matter how small the price. It really works out that way....

I own one, which I also bought from the Evil Empire™. I played quite a few guitars before purchasing it, and I honestly think the only thing you're going to find that's any better will be a step up to the $700+ range.

I'm very happy with it. I play it on a daily basis, and it sounds great and stays in tune well for such a cheap guitar.

This will keep me happy until I get a Conde. :)

hey hey now, well I did it. I went to the bastion of retail evil and for $350 total with a set of Savarez strings thrown in, I left with the Yamaha. So far, I am very happy with it. I thank you all for the help

No it did not. I had one from my, yes I will admit it now, Esteban classical guitar. Hey it served the purpose. I picked up a LaPatrie Etude for less than $200 with a very nice hardshell case. So I have two cases and two and a half guitars.

Are there any string recommendations?

You don't need a case for the Yamaha. :) At least mine never has. Just
hit it periodically with some lemon pledge along with the rest of the furniture
and play the heck out of it.

Hi odiemann,

Glad you are enjoying your new Yamaha. A few folks on here have mentioned that after they brought it home, they were able to shave some of the saddle down for an even better playing action...

I had done that to my LaPatrie last week and upon your suggestion, did it this afternoon on the Yamaha. I brought it down about 1mm more, plays quickly.

Even better... take that piece of plastic out and put in a bone saddle (did it to mine) . Not only will it make the guitar sound better, if you ever decide to use it as fire wood , you'll have less of a caustic burning smell.

The Guitar Center where I live has a Manuel Rodriguez Hijos flamenco that is similarly priced. I thought it was better then the Yamaha. But its kind of hard to tell the difference in sound between the two in that little guitar room. The action was lower on the hijos, and weighed a lot less if I remember coreectly.
