Capo or not?

I've been teaching myself from DVD (Graf Martinez and Juan Martin) and both these guys use a capo most of the time on 2nd or 3rd fret.

I guess this is normally done to suit the voice of the cantaor??

But should i use a capo when learning and practising?

Interesting q. I have the Martin solos books and almost always practice to those with a capo. I probably should try otherwise but a) they tend to sound best the way they're presented (although I personally enjoy moving the level 4 rumba around to 2nd 3rd 5th etc. ) and b) you'll need left hand strength because a lot of the pieces he capos, it seems to me, involve stretching that's difficult for beginners when you're in open position.

When I'm with my teacher, though, even if I feel a piece sounds better w/ capo (for example, the bulerias we're doing now sounds SO much nicer with capo on 2nd), I'll usually practice open more often than not (although I do switch it up). This is a) mental, because if I practice a lot with the song open then I won't be used to how much better it sounds when I play for others with capo on 2nd - I'm weird, if I practice something a lot I'll devalue it and won't play as well because I won't think it's as good and b) because playing open is usually toughest...I've found that almost any piece I learn open becomes that much easier capoed. So why not practice the hard way - makes the real way easier when it's time to strut your stuff :)

there was talk about this in another topic just a few days ago...they said to practice everything everywhere and that's correct, you have to get used to all the capo positions...
while practicing without a capo makes it more difficult for the left hand, i feel that it becomes easier for the right since the strings feel less tight (at least to me, i play picado a bit better when the strings aren't so tight)...
it's especially important so that you become used to the different distances between the frets and won't rely much upon looking at the fretboard while playing...
