question regarding the 6-note arpeggio

Hola!

I have a question regarding the 6-note arpegio (p-i-m-a-m-i), which I am struggling hard with at the moment. What do you guys think is the best way to do this technique? Do you think it should be done by placing the ima fingers on the strings simultaniously before starting the arpegio or would it be better to just have them loose and play one string at the time?
I have tried it both ways, and I can do it both ways at slow speeds (75 bpm), but which way do you think works best att higher speeds?

Henke

Hi Henke,
I don't know about "higher" speeds..
I personally don't consciously "place" or anything.
I tend to keep my fingers together and just immediately in front of the strings.
Keep the hand very still and let the movement come from the fingers.
Keep the movements very short...just enough to play the string...no "over-action".
Try to forget about technique and just feel a rippling movement and listen.
If it's not right then adjust.
The sound is what gives you the feedback IMO..
Not books or guides, although they can be helpful.

cheers

Ron

Full plant vs sequential plant. Only for the pima part. There are great players who do it both ways. As mentioned, you have to make the sound and achieve the speed. I have not seen anyone do a full plant for ami, ami, etc type arpeggios. But ima full plant is common. Nunez does not do full plant. Check out his video. PDL does full plants.

Here is paco doing some arps. Notice sometimes full plant sometimes sequential. 30 sec, 1:44 etc. Some good spots the camera changes angles, but good footage overall.
