Bridges??

Where are you guys finding bridges that are 7mm high? Everyone I have found appears to be 9.5-10mm high. Are you making your own, or thinning the 9.5-10's? Making my own would not be an option for me.

Also, I assume flamenco's have non-compensated bridges. Is that correct?

Thanks!

If your talking about those premade bridges, you won't find a flamenco one. By flamenco I mean one that is lower or shallower than a classical. Your options are to make one or you can thin the underside of a premade one. I compensate my bridges about 1.5mm to 2mm from where the exact scale location of the bridge would be. Is this what you mean or are you talking about the saddle slot?

That's a nice trick Tom, I hate seeing a guitar with the bone running squint on the bridge.

My Jose Rodriguez, built by a disciple of Miguel Rodriguez, is awesome, and is slightly under 10mm off the top - but the action of the low E at the 12th is a hair under 3mm - without buzz.

Looking at the Manuel Reyes flamenco I am building, the plans show what looks like a finish height of 10mm.

Make one yourself. It´s fun and relatively cheap and you can go for 12 holes right from the start.
My bridges are around 6 - 7mm tall and 190mm long and 27mm wide. I compensate 1 mm in the saddle slot, and the bridge itself, I compensate 1,5mm when I glue it on.

Good luck

Tom:

Well the saddle slot on the bridge that is on this ond negra appears to be straight (as near as I can tell or measure). However, when I measure, the bass side of the bridge itself appears to be about 1.5 mm further away from the center of the nut than is the treble side.

Reading Anders' response I guess there must be two ways to compensate:

1. Cut the saddle slot at a slight angle.

2. Off-set the bridge itself.

Is this correct?

I lean more everyday!!!!

Can I whittle one out with a pocket knife and a chisel? That's about the only tools I have for such a project. Honestly, I wouldn't even know how to begin making a bridge.

I made one and it's pretty straightfoward - I used a hand saw, 1mm and 2mm chisels and a bench drill press. It's one piece of rosewood and you whittle and sand it down.
