Canta'ores - how the *&$@?

I asked it before, jokingly, but now I'm asking more seriously. How do the canta'ores develop that voz ronca?

It must be more than agua ardiente. Do they receive special instruction, or do you have to be born with a rough voice?

It's pretty obvious, if you go to Spain, the people there just talk that way. A lot of them just have raspy voices...

A lot of people just have that kind of voice, as some have mentioned. Some peoples voice changes a little if you practice singing a lot. And there are even some that put on a "fake rajo" because they want that sound. I know people personally who have developed the "gypsy" sound as a technique. Also you can hear that sound with Carmen Linares and Jose Merce for example. They can sing also with a "clear" voice if they choose.

I think it is a shame that so many people go for that sound, expecially girl singers. I like to hear the different sound singers make, like Paquera, Caracol, Indio Gitano, Camaron, Maria Vargas, Chocolate, etc, each with a unique sound. So many feel they are required to have a certain sound to their voice, and so many sound the same these days. I like Poveda, he uses a fairly natural clear voice, but it is still very flamenco sounding. The female I prefer nowadays for her sound is Esperanza Fernandez.

Dolores Montoya aka Lole from the "Lole y Manuel" duo has a marvelous voice. She's my favourite flamenco singer although she maybe doesn't belong among the "true" flamenco singers she sings like an angel. I also like the legendary Nina de la Puebla, same with her.....
