taking a year out/job in spain? 
heh everyone,

ive come to the decision i want to take a year out and work and possibly study flamenco in spain.im 23 and if i don't do it now i never will.

im just wondering how hard it is to get a job in spain, some of my qualifications are the following:

BBS Bacherlor of Business major in economics and finance.
BA in Business French.
TEFL Intermediate level 2 Certificate.

I would like to teach english or work in a business related setting.
what is the economic situation in spain at the moment most of the info i have is only from el tiempo, time and newsweek.

whats the situation like in andalucia?

Hi Henry,

If you have a TEFL qualification you stand a good chance of finding work in Andalucia, especially if you are in Seville or the major cities. One problem is that it does not pay very well but the cost of living and renting property is probably cheaper than anywhere else in Spain. Since the euro cost of living has gone up, but basics, like wine and ciggarettes are much cheaper than in UK. My standard of living and quality of life has improved drastically since leaving London.

In Granada there's a lot of competition for teaching jobs and I know people who only work a few hours work a week at a school and take on private classes to supplement their income.

If you speak French, Spanish and English you may find better work on the coast with the tourists but you wont find much flamenco.

Try doing some google searches to get an idea of pay and job opportunities.

Good luck and yes you are right do it now while you are young. You have little to lose.

mostly what im concerned about is would i be able to live, ie pay rent,bills and feed myself etc.

my spanish is very hazy, i have mostly been learning from michel thomas cds and vocab cds.its not on par with my level of french maybe cause i never lived in spain

People manage to do that, as long as you dont have an expensive cigar habit or need a super duper apartment you can cut your cloth to fit your budget, for example, sharing an apartment. Food is cheap, menu del día ( 3 course meal with a beer) can be found for as little as 7 euros. Universities have even cheaper comedores and never seem to ask for ID.

Just make sure you have enough to live for a few months when you first get here, while you are looking for work, or try and arrange a job beforehand through the TEFl pages. Though you are more likely to get work if you turn up at the right time, September usually and apply direct to the schools.

I speak French and Spanish is much easier (a least the basic present tense ). You'll pick it up very quickly with another Latin language behind you. Just the Andaluz accent to contend with if you want one!

I reckon you need about 1000 Euros a month to be very happy in the South, not sure about the cities though.

Then you can live and work anyhere in the EU. I hear TEFL teaching (in organised schools) is poorly paid and awkward hour; setting up privately could work, depending on the area (cash in hand).

Best to save as much as you can before you come. It will take several months to settle in and find you way around. If I can help, let me know. I live in the country so not much going on around here - city is best for you.

I said very happy Live in a reasonably decent place, run a car, eat out, pay 20-30 Euros an hour for lessons etc. etc. It's a long time since I was a student.

The average wage in my neck of the woods is 800 Euros p.a. I guess you could halve that - Kate any comment on Granada city costs?

1e=1.29$ last time i looked. i will proably have a job by the end of may as im still in university and im doing the advanced level 3 tefl course so that shoudl give me an advantage.

i proably will start looking after the exams are over. i have friends in barcelona who could put me up for a while but is the place dead flamenco-wise, a lot of people tell me its a nice city to live in too.

Barcelona is a great town but it is expensive. I was there last summer and was very surprised. Its much cheaper down South and more flamenco too.

As for 1,000 euros a month, I'd feel quite comfortable if we had that. Most of the time we dont even though it is probably what it costs for the mortgage, bills, and living. Like I said you can live very cheaply down South.

I´ve never taught english and have a canadian passport...do you think that I could get a job as a waiter or something like that under the table? Just something to keep the money coming in for a while? Or do they have pretty strict laws when it comes to employing foreigners?

Any info you guys can give me would ber greatly appreciated, as I will be heading there soon

Under the table jobs in Andalucia pay about €3 an hour for a waiter or #30 a day for a labourer. Despite which there is still competition for this work. Recent immigration from Latin America has swelled the workforce, along with Morrocans, Eastern Europeans and students.
