Flamenco in Granada in march

Hi, I'm Ellen and I dance flamenco.
Im planning on going to Granada the 11th of march and stay for two weeks. Does anyone know if something interesting is going on during that time. I also like cante and guitar, not only dance. Concerts, peñas, juergas or any other flamenco-event would interest me.
I hope to hear from some of you out there...
Love, Ellen

Welcome Ellen,
I live near Granada and Kate ( a member here) is in the city - we'll keep my ears open. Send me a Private Message or Email when you're arriving and maybe we can all meet up in town?

Hej Ellen

Ps: Jeg synes ¿Que pasa? lyder bedre end "los vamos"

Un saludo
Anders

small WORLD!!!!
Mange hilsner, Ellen

Hi Ellen

Welcome to the forum. Theres a series of flamenco concerts at the Centro de Estudios Gitanos, also known as the Chumbera, in the Sacromonte. I saw the poster up yesterday. Also check out the Eshavira every sunday night, the Upsetter every monday night and the Teatro Isabel Catolica nd Teatro Alhambra which may have flamenco shows organised.

Hey Simon if you are reading this too, El Capulllo has a show in town in the 24th Feb I believe, cant remember where right now.

Kate

Hi Kate.
Thanks a lot for your information. It is so good to see that there is such a lot of flamenco in Granada now. When I stayed there for a longer while in 1992, there wasn't much going on, except that we had some great nights at Casa Juanillo and La Bulería. Very intimate, and actually the way I think flamenco is best...
Ellen

P.S. what a shame I can't go before - El Capullo is really great. I have experienced him a few times. The best time was at a gipsy wedding in Jerez, a true entertainer, what a shame, it still is so difficult to understand all that he says/sings. I wonder how many years in Andalucía that takes????

I dont know if it has changed that much, the Eshavira has been going for some time though the Upsetter is relatively new. Sometimes it's just luck, right time, right place. Juanillos and the Bulería are still going but shut earlier ( unless you get locked in with the locals) due to stricter laws about closing times. I remember 1992 as being so full of flamenco I could hardly sleep, but I was working very closely with a group at that time as we just produced their album. We also lived next to the Peña Plateria so we could actually hear if anything was happening as opposed to hearing about it afterwards

Ellen,
good luck on your trip to Granada. I don't have any information, just wanted to say it's nice to see a dancer come here. We have a lot of guitarists and it's good to get the other side's perspective as well.

Bienvenidos!

How how.

Hej hej

you lucky guys lived next to La PlaterÌa, I'm not jalous at all

so you have a recording studio. You must be "Los Ingleses" that Jaime Heredia told me about last summer. I hope that he really does something about the recordings, he said he was going to do with you this winter, because his first album was unfortunately not such a good picture of what kind of a cantaor he is...

Mange hilsner, Ellen

Not so lucky, an outside kitchen and toilet in winter was no fun at all.

Yes that's us. We formed an Association with Jaime and Emilio to try and get funding for flamenco recordings but no such luck. Jaime's first recording was paid for by the Junta but the producer took the lot so none of the artists were paid and made a real pig's ear of the recording and then did not even get copies made or distributed. That happens a lot here. We did a remix and made some copies for Jaime last year as we have a duplicator, not a lot of sales though and we would have rather started from scratch in our studio. Anyway we didn't get any flamenco recording done this winter with him or anyone. We've been really busy doing re-mixes and mixes for Gary Lucas, American guitarist, as well as recording various Spanish rock bands who have just discovered Harold's rock credentials. There is talk of us doing a recording with Las Tres Guitarras de Granada, Emilio Maya, Rafa Habichuela and Miguel Ochando which would be good.

Kate

oh that is the story. I can sometimes feel really sorry when I hear how the people try to make money on peoples dreams and then just treat them with no respect at all.
And today distribution is essential, much too essential.
I hope you'll be lucky with the 3 guitarists. Granada has quite a lot of good flamenco artists, but it is still a shame, the place is not respected like those cities of the "golden triangle of flamenco".
