Skirt or pants

Hello,

Is it possible to dance flamenco with wide pants, for example palazzo pants?
I saw a performance once with a kind of pants that were very flattering!
Where can I buy this kind?

I would go with the pants, even tho is more feminine bla bla the skirt hides 50 % of how hard your feet really work.

It takes away from it, get a guy to do the exactly the same thing as a woman , the guy's will look more impressive simply because you apreciate every single litlle move only because you can see it.
its unfair but is the truth

Ofcourse not all the time, you have to mix and match, and theres some dances where you just cant wear pants like Guajira etc. etc. because the hole essence of the dance is about beeing feminine.

On the other hand you cannot do a farucca in a dress, has to be pants because the dance is so masculine.

On the flip side , if you not confident with a certain dance a dress is good because u can get away with some.

Sorry i dont know what any of this pants styles are I am just talking pants in general

Florian,

Thank you for the 'support'
Palazzo pants are very wide and flowing. I thought the word 'palazzo' is spanish, but I'm not sure.
My question is where can I buy this special flamenco palazzo style?

There was a dancer named Carmen Amaya, who wore fitted pants, and even though this was scandalous to some, was very feminine. I have many videos of her dancing and she is considered to be the best female flamenco dancer.

I especially like the interpretation of the Farruca that Carmen Amaya did. Carmen could dance as hard as any man and broke at least one pair of shoes before the night was over.

A Farruca in a dress does not look good to me. However, anything done well is worth the effort.

So to answer your question, why not wear wide pants? It is up to you.

Oh hehe np is short for No problem

I have no idea what is the best material for dancing, is pretty sad since my last 2 x girlfriends were dancers and i was probably there when they were picking they'r dresses.
Make sure you are practical about it tho, rather then getting 1 flashy expensive dress u can only wear once in a show is better to get 2 different color skirts and tops etc, so that you can mix and match, cause i dont know about there but here you cant wear the same dress in the hole performance, they expect you to have different outfits for different dances etc.

Btw. is kind of refreshing for me to talk about skirts on a flamenco guitar forum hehe.

Where are you btw ? and are you just starting out ?

Seems like those palazzo pants would obscure footwork even more than a normal dance falda.
I've seen a number of women perform farruca in regular pants and vest or mannish jacket.
And I've seen guys in bata de cola. So everything seems fair game these days.

Guys in bata de cola? Hard to believe
But what do you mean with obscuring the footwork more than a normal dance falda?

Je je je yes funnily enough all the guitarists here do seem to talk about the guitar side of things but not all of us.

I say welcome as well and if you want to talk about dance, feel free. Just turn ablind eye when Florian gets on to tapping out bulerías on his girlfriends. Cool pic you posted by the way Florian.

Just to return to this topic, I read this interesting article with the dancer Sara Baras which covers some of the issues raised:

RE: Skirt or pants (in reply to Romanza

Thanks for posting this Romanza, very interesting. I found it a bit insulting to call traditional flamenco dresses "foreign-dolly frills of the past" but then the focus in this article does seem to be on the costumes. They even manage to write two paragraphs about the fact Baras does NOT use a Bata de Cola in her show.

The end list of who's who in flamenco is a bit lacking, mentioning only 6 people, no Carmen Amaya, Antonio Gades, Cameron, Paco de Lucia etc. And extremely irritating is the perpetuation of the lie that Farruiquito televised his bride's 'virginity test'. I wonder how they get away with that. Its the second time they've 'reported' this as fact. Last time they claimed female wedding guests were invited to take part in this ceremony and extract blood themselves

RE: Skirt or pants (in reply to Guest

Seen little dancing ,but anyway ..this is my opinion.

I like skirts , still sometimes a jersey is good ...
this question seem like "u like women in wedding dresses "?
Well , yeah ...but not all the time.

I mean if u are feminine ,it's not probably
because u were some types of skirt.I mean ...do I have to have big muscles
to be masculin?I hope not ,cause I hate pushups.

"Baras, whose compact but leggy proportions look particularly good in pantalones, seems almost to prefer dressing as a man - or not really dressing at all. 'I know a show is supposed to have special costumes, but I'd really like to make a piece with no wardrobe at all, just dance in everyday things like this,' she says. Her hand points to my own clothes, but she cuts the gesture short, wisely drawing the line at a flamenco spectacular performed in tartan drainpipes. 'When we rehearse, the dancers all just wear basic jerseys. I like that. Flamenco is inside."

I vote for skirts though ,but a little variety is good.
Btw , didnt know that Joaquin Cortes wears also a balck skirt sometime...

"Joaquin Cortes likes to perform in a long black skirt, and I once saw a bailaor with a fat tail of starched ruffles emerging from the back of his skin-tight trousers."

Sometime gals complain too much of gender discrimination ,and they would be better off
just acting.I mean this gender discrimination is something we all suffer (I am a technical
university for example and I live with some roomates that like cars. They ask how come
u are not in love with cars? What kind of a man are u if u dont like cars and dont fix sinks
and feel the urge to screw lightbulbs?I can give u plenty of examples..like I know men
that dont like to watch football (and I love it) ,and they are looked like "what the hell is
wrong with you?".Still I think, u are man ,cause u like women and that's all..there is no
more to that.

ah...well,damn ...I wrote so cheesy posts sometimes .

Flo , u seem to know too much about skirts ...what kind of a man are you ?(sorry Flo
,I just have to make jokes...I cant help it (I have a big nose...so please use this as material if u wanna make fun of me ,also i'm from moldova))

I guess because there's nobody double checking the "facts" - or because nobody challenges them. I don't know anything about Farruquito, but I guess that's one of the problems of the internet - there's so much information available, and so much of it untrue. It's a great resource but dangerous to take what you read as read.

I agree the 'Who's who' list was inadequate (No PDL, gasp!!!). That aside I thought a few of her observations were spot on.

I still think a sturdy pair of y-fronts is essential for flamenco
