The Flamenco Podcast - Episode 2

Hello, after many days trying to find somebody who could let me use a computer, I managed to record this second episode.
I hope you'll enjoy it.

It includes an interview with the guitarist Tino Van der Sman.

This is the link:

By the way, for the next episode I have talked to Raul Mannola, a well considered flamenco guitarist. He is open for questons. You can write questions for him and he will answer them in the podcast. -but I think the best thing is opening a new thread for that.

So this thread is for comments on the episode and the next one is for questions to Raul Mannola, ok?

Thanks enormously David

I jumped immediately to your part on Cuban music. You answer a question I have been meaning to post here for a while. My kid's cello teacher is Cuban so they play several Cuban songs in their orchestra, one of them being Guantanamera.

So I put it to her, what is this Guajira that crops up again and again in that song? And she tells me it means "of the country" and is a style of music with a fast rhythm. At which point she beat-boxes an extremely fast version of what any flamenco would recognise as the Guajiras rhythm.

In your podcast you call the style Punta Cubana. On wikipedia it is also called Punta Guajiro. I wonder when and where it is Guajiro and when and where it is Guajira. I realise the o or a give a masculine / feminine distinction. But this music style seems to exist in both masculine and feminine form even in Cuba - I wonder where (if any) the distinction is? Would love to hear more examples of Cuban Guajira or Guajiro.

Finally, the kids latest Cuban piece is La Bella Cubana of Jose White, which is perhaps far from flamenco, but is so beautiful we can't stop listening to it and I'll share one version of many at the risk of being burnt for drifting off topic .

Pretty sure the term is used the same way flamenco/flamenca is used. Depending on what you're referring to in relation to the style of music you'd use an A or an O. Not positive but that's my guess.
La musica es Guajira
Las personas que vienen de allí son Guajiros.
I'm likely a little off but somewhere in the neighborhood.
