Gems´n Garbage

When has been last time you held a true piece of junk in hands?

Maybe one should do so once in a while.
Weeks ago someone brought such to my house in order to let me evaluate it. Because of the local inflation such a thing will command the equivalent of a 1000 bucks, but actually it is of the kind that normally should cost you not more than 30 or 40.

I know that I am spoiled since 10 or 15 years / don´t get saftisfaction anymore with decent but shallow emitting guitars anymore (I could if due, but not that easily like in the past, for having got used to dynamic and lush instruments).

But the type I am talking about is the true garbage specimen. Bulky, blund and totally unbalanced.

Since I had that thing in hands, I appreciate a fine guitar even a bit more.
That piece of art that tells you about its luthier´s skills already when you pick it up. In the way that its weight is spread across the body and neck, in the way its shape flows and the haptic sensation it gives. Just like that already, let alone when you touch those strings and get showered sonorously with all colours of the tonal rainbow.

Just after Christmas. We met Rancapino in the street, went to a bar. He wanted to sing, someone went for a guitar and instead of his Bernal, brought his beach guitar. He said that he thought juergas ruined guitarras. Rancapino didn´t mind a bit. All the reverence for guitars on this forum is a lot of nonsense.

Just because your reduced sensibility may marginalize differences, it does not mean that others´perception ought to be like yours. (I know several guys who can only very little tell qualities apart. You are not the first one.)

And know one thing with great certainty:
A (upper scale) Bernal owner´s beach guitar will not even closely compare to the kind of garbage instrument that I am referring to.

Any musician with hearing /discerning capability in functioning order may accept such a dud when in need for playing without alternative at hand, but definitly without enjoying the instrument, its playability and the tonal width that it allows.

Buit I think to know what you´re actually trying to say. You are implying that people weren´t able to get from the instrument all the sonority that it has.

What makes you so aggressive to put people in charge this way? Is it envy from your personal limits?

Great; now you guys are telling me that it would be common that players could find their holy grail with a total dud of the kind you find in the ~ 40$ range.

Is there any thing other than just contradicting for opposing sake?

Always fun to see conservatives just trying to devalue progressive counterparts.
Logik and obvious conditions are tradiitionally being superfluous anyway to that end of stand.

Hey Rupus

I know your English is a bit wonky, so I won´t take offence, but what I was trying to say is that if a singer feels like singing, you don´t say "Wait half an hour while I go home for a decent guitar".

Fact is that I have a guitar of a quality that you will never have experienced, but in this situation, you play whatever is available, because the cantaor is much more interested in the toque than in the guitar.

If he has had to wait for half an hour, he will probably have gone somewhere else and the opportunity is lost. Flamenco es así.

un abrazo

I have seen such a thing...if you want some standard for true trash, we must look to engineering defects and such. Plenty of those going around...but to make a concrete example, many folks will and do prefer a cheap compensated instrument with low action, such as cheapest form of Yamaha available, to a master luthier vintage expensive old instrument that is with zero compensation and seems to be playing "out of tune", even worse if the action is high... to the extreme that they will modify the vintage guitar before choosing it over the "garbage".

Things change if a player I respect because they have stated a certain guitar is "good" or "bad" that I have also tried and tend to agree with. If he/she makes a claim such as yours, that is a different story all together. I can blindly agree with no other evidence. So it is not about contradicting for sake of being contradictary. Too many times my favorite guitars are poo pooed, and other times decent players hand me the "hermosa cannon" that is just pure crap to me.

Ricardo,

I don´t doubt on individual preferences, but those should hardly ever go as far as prefering a true piece of garbage over a really well build instrument, notwithstanding possible individual preferences, as the kind of dud that I was describing, its setup as well as everything else, is just horrible to everyone.

Hey, I was just aiming to say that guitars can be of such lovely exellence over all. Is that so out of this world?

Morante,

I already stated to understand that sometimes one can be in a situation where you accept lousy instruments.

I would be curious however to see your guitar, which ought to supercede that Antonio Marin Montero that I exprienced once (which must have been one of the best he ever built).

Wyne Brown,

If you think your disrespectful BS was needed anywhere why don´t you drop it somewhere in a beginners section?
