Bracelets

Why do flamenco players always wear bracelets on their right hand?
Does it have something to do with balance, maybe an indicator your arm or wrist is moving too much, or just tradition?

Nothing to do with guitar. Pure wrist embelishment.

Who do you have in mind as examples? There are plenty of videos of Paco Cepero, Sabicas, Carlos Montoya, Paco Pena, and others who are not wearing bracelets. Most videos of Paco de Lucia show him wearing a bracelet. But who else do you have in mind when you ask why they "always wear bracelets"?

You can find lots of Vicente Amigo fans on youtube.

Many gitanos love jewelry but I think it became a mandatory part of the flamenco uniform in the '80s with Camaron and Tomatito. I challenge you to find a better flamenco outfit than Tomatito in his Encuentro video.

Sabicas didn't need a bracelet. He had that big diamond ring on his left hand. He liked to flash the reflection at the good looking girls in the front row.

Exactly. Not to wax philosophical, but the statement that flamenco guitarists "always wear a bracelet on their right hand" seemed a bit too categorical. Sabicas, Paco Cepero, Paco Pena, and others apparently saw no need to. I think the original poster was referring to a younger set of players: tomatito, Vicente Amigo, a more elderly Paco de Lucia, et al.

in any case, I think we can assume that wearing a bracelet has nothing to do with the playing of those who do choose to wear one.

Gypsies wear gold in spain, right? At least in finland they often do, but finnish gypsies are very different from spanish gypsies

I kept expecting him to bust out a Folsom Prison Blues or Deck of Cards.

On Bracelets I often suspected that a player wore a copper bracelet because of it's alleged prevention/healing of arthritic pain. I would post a link but I think that it is up there with rabbit's feet and the like.

Young guys like this just want to be like Paco and Tomatito I guess.

It's common in spain to wear jewelry, I am sure sabicas had some, look at those rings. Some players probably feel it gets in the way of playing, even small wedding bands or watches. Others don't care or get used to it.
