Mundo Flamenco 3FA & iM2X tested

I fooled around a bit with my Mundo Flamenco Mod. 3AF because I wanted to know how that guitar sounds recorded on my iPhone 4s via the plug-in stereo microphone Tascam iM2X (all (r)). The app used for recording and access of the sound file was Rode Rec Light app which seems to work quite fine.

I'm astonished nobody reacts to this. An iPhone is something quite many people have in their pockets anyway. The Tascam iM2X is not a big extra burden either. To have such a quality recorder always with you that a s a total no-brainer is quite nice, I think.

My monitors are broken so I don't get a great idea but from my iphone it sounds pretty decent. Looks like they're only about $40 too. Not bad, I may consider this seriously. Thanks for the review!

That is amazing! How much was the microphone?

I paid something around 45 Euro (can't remember exactly). It's discontinued but there is a lot around on ebay and else...

The recording is totally untreated, just as it came into the recorder.

Lurked into YT hazzles ( that exist from censored here), I was expecting special fidelity on a budget.
But the recording is not specially pristine ( aside of close reflections in the room that seem to account for a bit of boxy sound).

This is certainly way better than what cheap gear would be getting you decades ago, with cassette rumbling and a distinctly higher noise floor, but not close yet to best examples I have heard with todays inexpensive / common devices.
For instance I remember untreated takes presented on the foro that were done with just an iPhone*, and which were of a remarkable clarity.
Not wanting to sabotage your enthusiasm, though. :O)

* Maybe the inbuilt mic does a better job?

I love the inbuilt. It even high passes at the spot where I would with EQ.

It's mono but works great to capture ideas.

I liked the recording and the sound of the guitar.

Good work.

I agree that mobile recorder do yield better results (e.g. my Tascam DR-40).

I think the beauty of the thing is that I mostly have my iPhone with me whereas I really have to consider whether I'm taking the DR-40 which is bulkier and heavier than iPhone and would require an extra bag or something...

@tijeretamiel

Thanks!

I suppose there's no chance of hearing a direct comparison? Like, plug it in, strum an E chord the unplug it, strum an E chord. Same room, same guitar, same strings, same player?

I can do that with time, no problem ... I'll post the result.

Here it is:

The recorders were piggybacked, so the microphones are as close to each other as possible.

Because the capsulas look same (at least from outside) the difference probably is in the preamps and converters.

Before I comment on how I hear the difference please see for yourself.

Wow thanks for that! I was actually wondering compared to raw iphone built in mic but no worries this was great.
The im2x sounded more full to me, I felt like it had a hair more bass in it.

Or was it the DR40 that had a clearer treble?

I think personally the DR-40 has a bit more of air and lushness; iM2X sounds a bit harder in my ears, but the difference is not that big, so if somebody has an iPhone 4s (old, wider plug, iPhone 5 doesn't work directly, maybe with an adapter) I think this is really an option for reasonable quality recordings.
