Paco Pena La Lola Rumba question

I love this song and of course how Paco does it.
I found a good tab for it.
Can anybody give me an idea about what style Rasgueados are used in this?

I tabbed it out years ago
Under the first page you see the most used patterns.

Also the "marote rasq. Is in it , more at the end.
P- up, M- down, P down, P up.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help.
I am a beginner and not sure how to read your tab notation.
I see some i's which is obvious.
but then there a circle with an X in it and square box.
Can you explain what those mean?

Hi Cervantes,

A square box is a "golpe"., In this case you strum the strings with your thumb, and hit at te same time with the ring finger the soundboard under the strings.

The circle with the x means you mute the strings together with a "golpe" om the strings/soundboard.

If you are a beginner, I recomend you to do some soleares instead. This is a very demanding and difficult rumba.
If you want to learn it anyway, do it as slow as possible.

Paco plays that rasgueado P- up, X- down, I- down, P- up — not that it makes a great deal of difference.

I learned that piece a long time ago, and asked Paco if what I was playing was right.

He couldn’t remember.

I found the same thing with Mario Escudero — to him, the Fantastic Guitars album seemed to be just something he and Sabas knocked together one rainy weekend

Thanks that explanation helps a lot.
I have not gotten into Golpes yet and I am playing a very nice to me classical guitar so i don't want install a tap plate on it, but I am hoping to pick up a Flamenco Blanca from the same local guy who made my classical, only because my birthday is coming up and I am going to sell my Epiphone Joe Pass archtop my wife and CFO said ok . Yes i realize I have a habit of trying to play above my level, but i find this song so inspiring though.

You can leave out the golpe with the ringfinger, it will scratch your guitar, but the muted golpe on the strings should be possible.
Good luck!

RE: Paco Pena La Lola Rumba question (in reply to Cervantes

I have been working on this song some more and I have noticed the tab I have is basically the the same tab on many web sites which I am sure isn't all that surprising.
It has many inaccuracies such as arpeggios with notes missing and even complete measures missing. The rasgueados seem to be made up and don't represent Paco's playing at all.
The first Am rasgueado on the recording there are 5 distinct beats and the chord is altered part way through where as the tab shows 11 beats with the same chord through out.
Don't get me wrong, I am grateful this tab even exists for a place to start and there is more than one way to improvise a song. But if I want to be true to Paco's recording I am going to have to figure out all these things. The hard part for me is not figuring out the notes but how to play each rasgueado which I guess is just going to take more learning and time practicing different patterns.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I agree with the earlier comment that slogging through a solo when you are a beginner is not the best way to learn, but assuming you don't mind paying you can at least work from an accurate transcription. Faucher is regarded as one of the best in the business at this:

Yeah I know its a bad habit I have.
I am 56 have a background in music playing clarinet and sax from elementary school to college. Since then I have flirted with guitar and have taken lessons in classical and jazz guitar but never progressed very far. I think at least right now that Flamenco is a good direction for me, I have always liked flamenco music and I am fascinated by all the various techniques used in it. I have been learning using the Graf-Martinez book and DVD, any other suggestions? Not sure I will find a good teacher here (San Diego, CA). Thanks for the link to the transcriptions.

There are pretty accurate transcriptions in two of the Gendai Guitar flamenco books, if you can buy, beg, borrow or steal them:

Staff notation only though.
