Seasonable humour

broadside

While I was waiting for my last anger management class I came across a copy of the last London Pena newsletter. There it was in black and white - Paco de Lucia is a gypsy! How could this be when for all these years he has been thought to be a non-gypsy like me.

Now I know there are some fragile egos at stake but you would have thought someone at the pena would have noticed and pulled the story before it went to press. I wonder if Paco knows yet.

I decided to investigate and found a trail of misinformation and gush leading to the well worn keyboard of a certain self styled flamenco sabio Carole Edrich. Her fascinating and comprehensive introduction to flamenco in London is worth a read. Apart from a bit of a problem with names (we all suffer from that) her attention to detail, is as flakey as my feng shui teachers grasp of world politics.

I love the bit that starts;

'But flamenco didn’t’ start in London, or even in Spain (a popular misconception).'

Popular? You just can't make this stuff up.

It just goes on getting worse and quite frankly libellous. The idea that London's Hanway Street is like something you might find in the back streets of Seville should have the Spanish Tourist Board calling their abogados. The evening standard came much closer to the truth earlier this year when an article described Hanway Street as 'London's longest urinal'.

Take my advice Carole. Stick to writing about stuff you know about. As you say yourself there is simply not enuff space in your head for more than the dance you are learning!

Moro,
It would be mas ético to put your real name to this piece as you address a living person by name.

If you email me I can add it in. If not, I will delete it.

I've had some great nights in Hanway Street, but that was a long time ago
