Flamenco families

It is interesting that flamenco has always been in the hands of a relatively small number of influential families. On Friday, José Rebujina gave a talk in the Peña de Juan Villar on ”Cantaores y Toreros del Barrio de Santa María”, which highlighted the extraordinary family Ortega.
It can be traced back to at least 1780: the majority of the men were either cantaores or toreros, the majority of the women cantaoras or bailaoras. Some of the most famous would be Enrique el Mellizo, Curro Dulce or Caracol. Joselito el Gallo, Rafael Gallito, Ignacio Mejías.
Worth reading for a detailed account of the important familes is “El Arte en la Sangre” by Félix Rodríguez Gutiérrez.
