Any Tennis Players? 
Any tennis players/lovers here?
I find tennis so close to playing the guitar, so many techniques and it is like a hobby as well as a sport, similar to golf, ballet and boxing. I think it could be the most technical sport with the serve being possibly the most complex motion alongside a golf swing (excluding gymnastics
It's my number one passion alongside the guitar, just thought I'd see if any other players out there.

Favourite players - Federer, Dolgopolov, Tsonga, Del Potro, Cibulkova, Lisicki, Li Na

Least Favourite - Gulbis, Tomic, Sharapova, Azarenka.

Anyway just though we needed a tennis thread!

p.s Do you find that your nails irritate you? Occasionally my middle nail cuts into my annular when I hit a forehand (especially on miss-hits).

I just started playing tennis last July.

It does remind me somewhat of playing the guitar in that each of the moves is so technical and requires such discipline to learn (at least, for most of us mortals). Also like guitar, there is an amazing amount of online geekery for one's perusal and amusement. I have a teacher and she just switched me to a semi-western, double-bend forehand, so I've spent the last few days reading up on all the many threads and articles I can find on the modern forehand. I do get the same enjoyment of learning and developing new skills and levels of mastery in tennis that I do in guitar.

I don't really follow the sport, but have been slowly getting to know some of the players through watching highlights on Youtube. Usually my favorite player is the one who is grunting the least loud on any particular match. I'm a little old school, so I guess my favorite players are still Agassi and Sampras.

The one thing is it's a little rough on my hands.

My father was a professional classical guitarist and tennis instructor. I played when I was young but got out of it. Played a little here and there since college but not much, just for fun. Oddly, I am undefeated since my father passed...but I haven't played any serious players really. It's just funny that I get challenged or bets are made and dust of the old racket and never lose, I just let my opponent hit the ball out or dump it. A very psychological game I think, once you start messing up it's hard to break out of it.

I was also into martials Arts very seriously as a youngster, and we have already discussed this correlation on foro. Turns out there are a lot of flamenco guitar players and enthusiasts with black belts in something.

That's really cool Ricardo, I'll come over and give you a match if you give me a lesson :P
Miguel the technical aspects are crazy, I've been playing 4 times a week since around 8 years old and I still change different aspects of my game and technique. I remember watching Sampras when I was 11 and changing to a one handed backhand. I have a huge callous on my right thumb (it looks so much bigger than my left thumb) and on my palm. The online fandom is crazy, all the forums are pretty much pointless, but there is so much material online. I never had real coaching so years ago I taught myself watching Federer and online coaches.

It is a sport however that has so many levels of play and it's shocking when you come across someone hitting 120mph serves and puts you in your place haha

120 mph!? That would be quite an experience if I survived. :)

To put it in perspective, my hitting partner is a 65 year old piano teacher who has a daughter my age. I am, however, excited to hit today with a new guy who's younger than me and therefore I won't feel guilty about running him!

But those guys are the most fun to beat cuz if you can simply return the suckers and they screw up repeatedly, they get SO mad!

Then they double fault and after that they serve much slower, so funny.

I never got into tennis, but I have played squash forever. Squash has a very different swing than tennis, with much more wrist action. I love the intensity of a squash match. An hour of squash, a shower afterward, and a cold beer, and all seems right with the world. At my age, and as long as I have been playing squash, my knees are shot, and I find I cannot cover the court like I used to. The trick is finding opponents of a comparable caliber. I have a regular partner, and we play three times a week. Keeps one in good shape.

Im a big squash player too, play in local leagues, doesn't stimulate me mentally as much but damn does it physically.

Regarding "mental stimulation," a well-played squash match involves a great deal of strategy: lobbing the ball to a rear corner forcing your opponent to the back of the court, then upon his return shot, delivering a fast drop shot at the front before he can reach it, as one example. One thing I have always liked about squash is it involves a lot of strategy, particularly in setting up your opponent for a kill, as opposed to American racquet ball, which seems to me to consist of each player hitting the ball as hard as he can until one misses a shot.

Regarding "mental stimulation", I didn't specifically mean strategy (every sport has strategy) more like working on form and technique. Well that's perhaps what's missing from my squash game, I "improvise" too much and use physicality. Its funny what you say about racket ball ( we don't have that over in the UK), I used to view squash as the same, however I think the more you know the sport, you see its limitations just like chess and when you watch top players, they anticipate so well and the physical side dominates.
I recall Edberg playing in the top Swedish leagues for squash after tennis.

I will say this, with the amount of work I have put into tennis, in another sport the same input could have me competing in professional leagues.

Squash, of course, originated in the UK and has since spread around the world (thanks, in part, to the British Empire!). In fact a couple of Brits, Nick Mathew and James Wilstrop, are among the top squash players in the world today, and about 10 years ago another Brit, Peter Nichol, was on top for several years. During the 1980s and 1990s Pakistanis dominated the top levels of squash, but the last few years have seen the Egyptians dominating. A Malaysian, Nicole David, has been the world's No. 1 women's squash player for the last seven years. Like tennis, squash is truly international. My regret is that an American has yet to break into the top level of squash. We'll just have to keep trying.

In the days when I belonged to a tennis club, I quite often got invited to make a fourth by a trio of more advanced players whose colleague hadn't shown up for some reason, my protests of relative incompetence being waved away with “We don’t care.”

If I had a pint for every time the receiver advanced gloatingly on my poopy serve and then hammered it either long or into the net, I’d be kept in drink for a long time

I thought classical guitar players are the ones who play golf and tennis and
other bourgeois and expensive sports. And flamencos are either drunk or on drugs.

I was actually surprised to hear that Ricardo's dad, a classical guitarist, was a player since tennis can be hard on the hands. I took a lesson today from a tennis player/oboist and my hitting partner is a piano teacher.

I played tennis for years with no problem. However:

• Fencing broke my thumbnail repeatedly, since it got smashed against the guard when I lunged.

• Judo proved totally impossible, since you have to grip the other bloke’s gi, hard. The instructor said “What do you mean, you can’t cut your nails because you play guitar with them? You play guitar with a — a — plonker!”
