Ho Hum

I just got a depressing email, from a newly ex-pupil.

He's a really sweet guy aged 75.

He has been trying to learn how to play jazz his entire adult life ..... from books. The results have not been great.

So we had three lessons where I tried to encourage him to play by ear.

He found it confusing. So he is about to redouble his attempts to learn form the page.

Fifty years..... three lessons...

Ho hum.

Don't beat yourself up David, maybe he is a bit deaf.

Uh, D, trying to get a 75-year old to change his whole paradigm of playing is... well, rather audacious, isn't it? As my father-in-law tells me, "I'm old. I'm not going to change now!"

It's not a question of age.

If he hasn't managed to learn to play in 50 years and he's 75 that means he couldn't play when he was 26 and 27 and 38, etc. It wasn't his age that stopped him for 50 years.

Yup, he should stick to his guns for another sixty years or so.

I will never forget in a jam, where he was playing clarinet and had gotten two and a half bars ahead of the rhythm section, whistling the tune at him as hard as I could.

I believe his clarinet teacher preferred that he memorise the tune from sheet music.
