Anything equal/outperform Dr Compas ...

http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=254683&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=clack&tmode=&smode=&s=#254965

Kind of related to the looper thread above but a bit more specific...

I just bought an Ipod and I'd like to try using it to generate flamenco palmas/cajon etc to play along to at background music gigs (restaurants and coffee houses etc) for a couple of numbers. I'll be running the ipod straight into my PA and my utmost concern is sound quality, and getting something that's as realistic as possible.

So far the best I have heard is Dr Compas, but there are about 8 apps in the app store to choose from when I searched on flamenco metronome, and several do not have trial versions to check out (found a few Youtube videos though). It would be good if folks could recommend anything that performs better or equal to Dr Compas.

Trouble with most of these things is they have limited samples which are all triggered at same volume, and sound very artificial as a result (clack clack clack). Dr Compas seems to have a lot more dynamics within the patterns, plus it 'improvises'. Shame it doesn't have a few more variations for each palo, but I'd rather sacrifice features for audio quality.

Obviously there are more sophisticated ways to generate audio percussion backing but as stated above, this is just for a couple of tracks and only at background music gigs.

Plenty of loops around so that you can cut them to your liking and make a play list of your gig set. Problem with Dr. Compas, though it sounds great through the PA, is simply stop and start when you are playing.

I am using now an App called 'Ole Compas' its fairly easy to use and there is a demo version , but its pretty cheap anyway , the loops are ok , but the thing I like the most is that if you dont like them you can change them or even make your own ...and also add your own instruments if you wanted ...

I was hoping for a place where you could leave and collect other peoples compas'es if you liked them ....

but there are a few other good ones that are all pre-made around ...

I'd have it right next to me and I don't mind it running through one compas before I come in, but yeah ending would be tricky.

I thought about doing this as prerecorded audio using loops in a DAW etc. instead but to be honest I don't want to be tied to a loop of a preset length (and even then there is the problem of cueing the ending somehow). Good to know it sounds Ok through a PA though.

Compás Builder (with the associated Compás Builder Lite for iOs) has very good sounds and doesnt stop. The big (computer) version also allows you to program your own loops with good sounding instruments, which you then also can import into the iOs version.

see here:http://www.flamenco-compas-builder.com/de/

best

Just had a look - requires IOS 7.1 and my Ipod runs 6.

I like some of the pattern arrangements but the audio...

Had a play on 'Bulerias 2' - sounds very artificial to me - the cajon is just going rat-tat-tat-tat, no dynamics or changes in timbre like you get when you play one for real. Same with palmas, its like midi triggered samples with everything at the same velocity.

Guess I was right - Jason and friends can't be beaten for audio quality. Just ran Dr compas thru my studio monitors, pretty damn good! Just wish they'd develop it with some more patterns but love the improv, this is one clever app.

DAW + 1 or 2 MIDI pedals = better than anything else

Yeah but a massive load of hassle and expense just for a couple of tracks in this situation.

That's not true at all but I see you have your opinion made.

Oh, I see you're one of those "hardcore know it alls"... good for you!

That attitude will take you far, starting by me not telling you how to do that easily with a cost ranging from 0 to around 60 bucks.

LOL! Irony day on the Foro - I was giving you back precisely what what you gave me in response and tone, because that's exactly what I thought when I read your post. Good for you too, mate!

'Oh no, how will I ever survive without Rui's 'expert' advice!'
Oh dear, gear nerd alert.

Rui, you're in college I recall? By my calculation I was producing and mastering CDs whilst you were in primary school, so I'll skip on the basic audio advice, thanks.

To me it's as simple as this:

- I mentioned an option

- You said it was too hard and bla bla bla without even asking how I do it (obviously because you're very experienced and you know all the options available)

- I said it didn't have to be hard

and so on.

Seems I've been wrong all this time... after all that loop/DAW/pedal thing is supposed to be an hassle (I was doing it easily.. I must be a newbie but now I'll make it hard or even discard it as an option, just like the pros) and even my age must be about half of what I thought it was.

You're very wise sir.

Maybe best if you stuck to 'How can I sound like Vicente Amigo?'

I never said that but even so.. that sounds like a much better option than spending time trying to sound like an ass.

You surely nailed that sound.
