steady gig

Well, I've been contacted by the music director of a posh club here in Scottsdale called Barcelona to do a steady gig on Monday nights as a guitar duo. I got together with a local guitarist and practiced today. We put together about 20 songs, Ottmar and Gipsy Kings, Brazilian, Latin, etc. We did a Sevillanas cycle, too. Our future plans include some Sevillanas that Paco did with some other guitarist, and adding more flamenco as we get the time to work it out.

It's my first steady gig so it should be kind of fun. 7-10 on Monday night is a little weird, but hey... it leaves the weekend for my higher paying, private engagements.

See my new and improved website for my schedule! :)

Miguel,

Cool. Now all you need is a black hat and sunglasses.

For those that don't know, our buddy Esteban had a steady gig in Miguel's town for years and he's (Esteban) laughing all the way to the bank.

Check out the picture on the left. I'm telling you Miguel; black hat and sunglasses, that's all you need baby! Oh and an endorsement from (or picture) of Segovia.

It's the gift of music.

Pat

Hi Mike,
Great to hear things are going good for you amigo!
Performing is an art in itself...it's easy to be self indulgent and say "well I only play this or that"...
Pleasing an audience is an important thing IMO...
After all...that's what they paid their money for.
Stagecraft is just as important as technique when you're playing professionally IMO.

cheers

Ron

I dressed up as Esteban for a costume party once. It wasn't that hard, since I normally wear all black anyway (it's pretty much required for many of my gigs). Then I borrowed a friend's black leather hat and wore some sunglasses. I made a little sign that said "Fine Handcrafted Guitars, 3 E-Z payments of $33, As Seen On TV".

Did anyone get the joke?

Sure, and I think Miguel's costume must have been a scream! Estaban is on TV all the time in the Bay Area. He's probably selling a ton of guitars-I think it's more like three payments of 69.00, but you get his DVD's too! And a little amp. I met a guy once who had seen his show, dug it, bought his record, loved it. He loaned me the record because he wanted me to check it out, and I checked it out.....................I told the guy it was great.

Did people get the joke? Yes. Esteban is very well known around here. Actually my friends from Mosaico were his replacement at the Hyatt, where he had played for 12 years. I have to give him credit because he has probably opened a lot of doors for me here in terms of gigs--"I want something sort of like Esteban." This weekend I had a gig on Thursday, 2 on Friday, 2 today, and I turned down one on Sunday because of the Eagles game. Then on Monday it's back to work, at Barcelona. I have to think Esteban's success has contributed somewhat to mine.
