Intro from Carmel Valley, CA

Glad to be a part of this forum. I've participated, though not of late, in many of the old lists on yahoo and elsewhere. My name is Tim Smith and I began playing flamenco back in 1964, in Long Beach, CA.

I studied there initially with Joel Valdivia and later with Bill Carden, who recently passed away. Bill and I remained friends over 45 years, although I left Long Beach in the mid '70's. I hung out at the World of Strings and was a good friend of the owners Bob Mattingly and Gene Loranger....Bob was a gifted luthier and Gene a fantastic hand with instruments of all kinds as well as being a top notch jazz guitarist.

I went to Sevilla in 1966 as an 18 year old kid to learn from the root. Unfortunately, I didn't know enough to know where to go, but I had a great time figuring out how to survive alone in a foreign country.

I haven't played much for the past 25 years.....fits and starts. With Carden's passing, I inherited his '51 Vda y Sob de Esteso 'blanca' and his Mattingly. They join my '48 Vda y Sob de Esteso 'negra' (an anachronistic term for those days).

I've also inherited a phenomenal flamenco collection on vinyl which I am not transferring to AIFF format. I'd like to find a home for the vinyl with a peña or organization that would use the music to remind people of the history of the arte and the days before jazzification, and would be happy to donate in Bill's name if the cause is just.

As I"ve posted elsewhere, the '48 and the Mattingly are for sale.

Thanks for letting me join in, I'm feeling hopeful that I can get these old hands to work again.

Hello Tim,

Welcome to the Foro.

I used to live in Big Sur in the 1980's and worked at some of the restaurants when I was going to college. I remember a few of the local guitar players who played in those venues, one who played flamenco and the other played classical. One was Terrance...can't remember his last name and the other fellow I'm drawing blank on. But the flamenco solo player was really friendly. He had red hair and red beard and at that time played an Oribe. Funny I would remember his guitar. Eventually he went to MPC, where I was in college, and studied nursing. I used to talk to him in the student cafe about flamenco guitar.

I live up Oakland for now, but I know Carmel Valley from my student days of sneaking into hot tubs after hours at some of the luxury inns.

Thanks Stephen...Terrance Ferrell and the red bearded guy is Peter Evans, both still around. I had the good fortune to once attened the Big Sur Juerga that Pete and his pal, whose name I can't recall, put on in the '70s and 80's. Saw Rosa Montoya dance barefoot there, under the stars around a campfire, with a number of players and singers just lighting it up.....summoning duende from earth itself. Man.

Those Big Sur parties that happened at someones place in Palo Colorado Canyon, I heard about them.
