Hi Folks, been a while..

Haven't been on the foro for a while. Mucho busy and all that. What have I missed? Simon - are you actually living in Granada now? Lucky B if you are!! We are (at last) planning a family holiday to Spain next year, staying in my brother's place. My geography aint that good, so how far (in terms of driving hours) are you guys, Kate and Anders from the Costa Del Sol? My news... I've done quite a few gigs over the summer with Mercedes (the dancer) although she is now pregnant and hanging up her castanets for a while . I'm still playing solo of course, though the season is now drawing to a close. Just had a killer 5 gig week last week to finish off the summer (inc. 3 weddings) but as usuual looks like I'm going to be a lot poorer over the winter Oh well, time to finish my CD, which at last is now at the mixing stage. No more recording, hooray! On the RSI front, in a couple of weeks I have a consultation with a hand specialist in London who is something of an expert in FHD, so ...err fingers crossed she can help me out (ouch, terrible dystonia pun, there). Just started working with Mark (Barney) who also posts here, so that's another Foro colloboration for you to notch up Simon. We'll be doing the typical guitar duo rumba thing and we already have a bunch of gigs lined up. That's about all my news. Good to see all the regulars here, and I see Florian is back too. Nice one - how you doing, Florian? Enough babbling, on with the show.

ORIGINAL: Miguel de Maria Will be good to hear how your experiences with the dancer have changed your flamenco sound. Probably not much ;-) At least, no more than listening and experimenting. If I had the benefit of a more experienced accompanist around it would have helped a lot more. I do think its helped some things - like for instance playing tangos compas a gazillion times. It becomes so internalised that its much easier to swing it. I think you'd drive yourself nuts if you didn't. It was interesting to see how much playing solo flamenco differs - like the liberties the soloist can take with falsetas - speeding up the tempo to make a tremolo falseta sound good, for example. We do a farruca and I had this nice easy tremolo falseta (Batista, I think) in the middle, but she pointed out that I had speeded up ie the bass accompaniment in the tremolo was suddenly faster than the tempo I had been playing the compas at. So we had to iron that out before we did it live. The trouble is, taking the tremolo at such a slow pace sounds weird & the whole effect is lost, but hey, she's the dancer and so she calls the shots. You still busy Mike? You work with other guitarists don't you? Would be good to get some suggestions from you for duo repertoire - you know, anything vaguely Latin and upbeat with a good groove. Nothing classical, we are playing noisy environments. Cheers.

Jon, i dont hate anything, i dont look the the flamencology of it, just for a nice music. ps in the audio section , theres a farucca intro and a alegria intro i transcribed for a show but they are both for 2 guitars, if you like it i can make you tab of it. they just intros, but the alegria intro you can stretch and play it twice, add in 2 silencios and u got yourself a solo. farucca , same thing, add a few falsetas.

Jon, summer is our slow season, but this has been my busiest summer so far, so...that's good! As far as working with other guitarists...man, the two that I work with commonly we play a lot of originals. But off the top of my head, simple sevillanas are easy to coordinate, rumbas such as Ottmar Liebert are, too, and people like them. Or any Gipsy King song--Moorea is scandalously easy for a couple guitarists to work out. Some Santana--Samba pa ti, Europa, Oye como Va, Guajira are all easy. As far as Standards, Spanish Eyes is good...Manana de Carnaval is good although not as easy for a duo, add Girl From Ipanema. Also La Paloma and Moliendo Cafe... El Condor Pasa. That's an Andean tune, although everyone thinks of it as Paul Simon's song! Actually, those Andean songs are al l pretty easy for a duo and are rhythmic. If you have heard John William's newest Venezualan CD, those pieces sound like they would be great for duos. That's 12 songs there! Add some improv and you have a set and half at least :)

Ha you've already listed most of our present set! I've been asked a few times for Santana. I always assumed it was really electric guitar material, but then I'm no expert on his stuff, just have one album. God ideas, thanks Mike.
