Siguiriyas of El Viejo de La Isla

I've finished a revision of my siguiriyas webpage that's kept me busy for the last month or two. It focuses on a group of at least nine cantes from Cádiz and Jerez that have a common structure and are almost always sung in one form or another, usually as a "middle" cante. In that sense, it might not be an exaggeration to say that this group accounts for one-third of all siguiriyas. By my count, the average is about 10-15 examples of recordings from most singers. Pastora and Mairena have 17 and 23, respectively, and Manuel Agujetas has about 70!

Here's the link. You might have to reload the page (look for today's date):

http://www.canteytoque.es/sigclas.htm#derivados

The link shows a new section that describes the group, and I've revised the texts on each style and have added some samples and removed others.

Wow Norman,
That's great work and a really amazing site. Serious work gone into making this fantastic resource available to the public. Once this busy weekend is over I'm going to spend the week listening to all those cante samples.
Incredible!!!
Thank you so much for making this available to everyone
John

Thanks guys, glad you like it. The level of analysis is pretty crazy, as there are samples to compare a single sung line of verse from 20 different recordings (what I call melodic arcs), but I think this helps to see what may be Manuel Torre's variations on the styles El Viejo de La Isla and Francisco La Perla 2. In their book, Molina and Mairena wrote that it was impossible to know the original versions of those styles because of Torre's influence. At the least, the study provides guitarists with insight on the development of some very popular cantes.

Your not kidding

Your site really is a great resource. Are you getting a lot of traffic to the site within spain?
