John Williams in accompanying mode!

Don't know if anybody had a chance to see the Last Night of the Proms from London.
John Williams did the Concierto de Aranjez and as usual was brilliant.
The countertenor Andreas Scholl, stole the show though, with his ethreal "castrate" style of singing.
The voice quality was hypnotic to say the least....as I said, he absolutely stole the show.
Anyway, he and John Williams after the interval did a simple voice and guitar piece.
It was really interesting to see how JW accompanied, for he did so much like a Flamenco player...ie..waiting until the singer hit the note before following with the chord, so like he was always about a quarter note behind on changes.
I've never seen this before in "western" kind of music.
I'm wondering now if this is something his friend Paco Peña taught him or if this was just the natural way to accompany a singer, before the likes of pop music, where everybody arrives on the same beat at the same time?
It was certainly very effective and enhanced the whole mood of the piece.

Anyway, it was a great night.

cheers

Ron

John Williams is amazing no doubt, and his buddy Paco Pena will always be my favourite flamenco artist. To me, they are the representatives of the 2 genres that I play and love so much.
