Ricardo..a question!

Ricardo,
I was reading an interview with Gerardo on Flamenco World where he talks about "the twelve rhythms of Bulerias".
What are the twelve rhythms?
I can think of about 5.

cheers

Ron

I don't know Henrik..

"A musician can really think of himself as a flamenco musician when he's at a fiesta with his drums or his bass, and he can blend into the mêlée. And if they play bulerías, then bulerías it is, and if they play a toná then OK - toná. That's one thing, but using those twelve compases por bulerías like Chick Corea is another, that's not flamenco..."

Maybe he said "Those twelve's" compases" ?

Ricardo was on line at the time so I tried to catch him while he was on, but I was too late.

cheers

Posting a reply to myself here...

So there you go..
Even Gerardo has in his head what is Flamenco and what is not.
Let's step back a bit here!....Really!!.....Gerardo??
The most open-minded Flamenco virtuoso on the planet?

I thought from a lot of stuff I read on the Internet (from non-Andalucians), that in modern Flamenco Guitar, everything is basically Flamenco if you say it is?
The main thing is being yourself...and expressing yourself in your own way....

Or have I picked this up wrong?

cheers,

Ron

Well it is a translation, and what he is saying is that when the jazz guys jam in 12/8, it does not mean they are playing "bulerias". He is saying there is a difference in the feeling of the compas, despite the fact the math is equivalant. Chick Corea does not really play bulerias that I have ever heard. He has great rhythm, but doesn't feel things like the remate. Same with other jazz guys that hear bulerias and think it is 12/8.

All this reveals is where Gerardo personally "draws the line" as I discussed before with Mark2. Like I said, everyone has their own personal idea. Gerardo allows drums and bass if it is truly bulerias (whatever that is ). Agujetas sees it differently no doubt.

Ricardo
PS, not to offend any scientologists on here, but Chick is a Scientologist OT8, or top level. That means he can read people's minds, and concider's it his duty to "audit" (read the minds of) his audience and bandmates when performing. Ummm, you'd think after all these years of "auditing" Paco de Lucia, that he would of figured out the difference between bulerias and 12/8!!
