My Jubilee Photo of the Week

We had a ripping street party in my road yesterday and I was the 'official photographer'. What great neighbours I have, that I had never met in 4 years of living here! Anyway, I know them now and I tried a new technique for me, with off-camera flash. It has opened my eyes to the potential.

I would be very happy to get some feedback as I am going to look for some paying photo work this year. The rest are being published here as I process them.

Well I don't know much about photography but I think that's a wonderful shot. All the different expressions of joy facing in various directions, and especially the way the guy with his arms up is framed by the rather attractive young lady and the man with the kid. The lighting works quite well, it seems to me, although as you say it's early days and you will undoubtedly find ways to do it even better.

Off camera flash, yes it looks like news photos from the 1940s. What kind of lens?

The Ealing Studios classic background helps too - looks like the war is over at last.

It was a reference to the old films (e.g. It Always Rains on Sunday, Passport to Pimlico, the Lavender Hill Mob, etc.), not to real estate.

So they really are "dour".

Thanks guys. That shot is my favourite from the day. I was using my new Fujifilm X100 digital camera with a fixed 35 lens and extra flash.

The young lady is studying photograph and collects old cameras as well I wonder if she would model for me? Seriously, she is very photogenic but only 16, I think. Couple of nice shots of her.

Though I do have other pretty neighbours

Estevan...I love those old films too!

Naw.. not really "dour", it's just that a wee flag costs money an' it's only fur the day....a wee bit o a waste dae ye no think?

cheers,

Ron

Escribano, I have a single coated Zeiss lens in a 2-1/4"format body - it gives this really beautiful crispness that is different from modern coated lenses. It is ideal for those flash shots. It's also great for B&W portraits.

I'd like to loan it to you to see what you do with it. If we can find someone trustworthy going to London from SF I'll send it along with them and you can use for 6 or 8 months if that appeals.
