How much technique practice is too much?

Hi everyone, i'm just curious as to how much technique practice is too much. I recently recieved a Manuel Granados Book with lots of exercises in the front which i've started on and they're great. My question is, how much time should you spend on each bit?? I've been paying more attention to my picado because it's my worst technique by far, so i spend 25mins on that and then warm up with some arps and other stuff. I usually try to apply technique practice into my playing as soon as i can. So why practice and arp ex. when you could just play alegrias for ages..... I don't where i'm going with this anymore, SO how long is too long....for technique practice??
Any good tips for practice are welcome.
See ya

Well, I don't know. David Russell, the excellent classical guitarist, breaks down a 3 hour session into:

1. 30 min technique
2. 2 hrs new works
3. 30 min mini concert

Is there any logical reason why the exercises have to be all at the start and not splattered throughout?

How long you practice a special technik isnt important. If you do it wrong or to fast, you can spend years on that and you dont become better.

I've heard it said that once you've mastered technique - like David Russell - then you only need spend 30mins a day maintaining it.

But I think those of us still trying to improve should spend more than 30mins a day. So for me I'd switch his figures around so that 2 hours is on technique and maybe 30mins on learning pieces.

My approach now is to do
20 mins Picado
5 mins on 1 new arp ex (stay on tha ex for at least 2 weeks)
2 hrs playing along to compas cd's
then learn little bits
practice mellow libre forms at night when i'm not allowed to make noise
Then sleep and dream of jamin with PDL

I just had a lesson tonight and i'm all happy with my new solea falseta

I usually practise until the point where I find myself actually getting worse, then I stop. That is, I "play to exhaustion" which can take anywhere from an hour to 4 hours depending on my mood. I find that after a certain point you are either not absorbing anything or worse still, absorbing mistakes.

That aside, I have met a guitarist during a trip to St. Petersburg who practised 20 minutes a day and still managed to sound good. It's not about the time devoted. It's about the will to grasp something. I see kids forced by their parents to learn music repeat the same piece 50 times and still not get it. I see kids who come to the school of their own accord play a piece 3 or 4 times and then get it. The more you want it, the faster it comes. Time matters, but it's secondary to sheer desire.
