Guitar serial numbers?

Last December I bought (on-line) a hand-built flamenco guitar from a well-known luthier who (purportedly) works by himself building them one at a time.
I liked it a lot and orderd another similar instrument in different woods. The serial numbers of the two guitars differ by 118! Does this mean he was able to single-handedly build 118 guitars in less than five months?

I don't want to ask him directly, as it might be embarrassing and upset our relationship. But what do you guys think? Are guitar serial numbers supposed to be accurately consecutive and strictly date-related.

Just interested. . .

Was the guitar you bought in december allready finnished? it could have been laying around for a time if thats the case, maybe he didnt put a label on beofre sending etc

But if the serial numbers are given out one at a time, escalating also one at a time for each instruments, and the difference is 118, it means he build like 1,3 guitar each day(or something)

*edit* If you are pleased with your guitar, then it doesnt really matter IMO

In case it is an Andelusional Guitar™ it wouldn't surprise me if he built 1,3 guitars a day until you placed your second order.

I'm not sure about other makers, but my Romanillos is #407. Julian Bream's famous Romanillos, made soon after, perhaps the very next one, ended up being #501. The explanation is that mine is the 7th of the 4th series, modeled to some extent on a 1950 Hauser, while Bream's was built as a trial run for a commissioned copy of a 1933 Hauser that belonged to Sergio Abreu. Due to the success of Bream's guitar, the 5 series continued for some time.

On the other hand, in the 1960s and 1970s, the Ramirez 1a's and 2a's seemed to belong to the same sequence, whether they were classical or flamenco.

My 1982 Arcangel Fernandez blanca has no serial number, though the label is signed and the underside of the soundboard is signed and dated. When Richard Brune appraised it, he explained that at the time, all of Arcangel's instruments were contracted to a Japanese dealer. Those guitars were delivered with serial numbers. Occasionally Arcangel would make an instrument for a favored player or collector, but these would have no serial number.

According to the English luthier Brian Cohen, through whom I obtained the Arcangel in 2000, it had belonged to a collector. Brune said, after going over it with a magnifying glass, there was no sign it had ever been touched, much less played. I bought it to play, but it's been well taken care of.

back in the day when people used checks to buy goods and services some stores would not accept a check with a number less than 100. the rationale was that a check with a low number meant the person was not well established, financially speaking (and sometimes address speaking as well). many people would rip up the first 100 checks to give the appearance they were established. the same logic could be used in this case--the luthier can now post/advertise/sell a guitar with serial number 356 implying he has made 355 guitars before this guitar which in fact could be the fourth guitar he has made.

just curious:
You say that the numbers differ by 118. ¿so what was the actual numbers?

Isn't that unimportant in case the numbers don't represent the chronological order of the guitars from the workshop?
