Converting a peg head to gear tuners?

Can one of you builders out there tell me what may be involved in converting an old peg head guitar to machine tuners?

Presumably it would not be that much of a deal to convert to the newer planetary pegs, but what about slotting the head and installing geared tuners? Feasibility, problems, probable costs, whatever. . .

If the head stock is thick enough and long enough to accept tuners it's not a particularly difficult task. That doesn't mean it won't cost you some money since it's rather time consuming and requires finishing.

Drilling 6 holes and cutting two slots! some finishing work and thats about it really. costs will vary from one luthier to another and also will vary depending of what tuners you want.

converting to planetary tuners may not be possible. I depends on the size of the wholes I would guess

Did the luthier have any explanations why the sound improved so much?
In what way did it improve the sound; more sustain, brilliance, tonal quality, or what?

Are you saying that peg heads do not sound as good as machine heads? I never heard that before.

Be most interested to hear what the builderQuote: had to say. . .

I have geared pegs on three guitars and prefer them to my others with machine heads. I cannot determine any changes in sound from wooden pegs to the geared pegs. It would seem much easier to just install the geared pegs yourself.

I had the Kenny Hill shop replace the pegs on my '67 Ramirez 1a blanca with good quality Goths more than 10 years ago. The pegs had gotten pretty quirky. The only change I noticed was how much easier it was to tune the guitar. No big change in tone.

Frank Fork at Gryphon in Palo Alto had refused to do it because it would "alter the character of the instrument"--even though Jose III himself had offered to do the job when I complained about the pegs. I just never had the guitar in Madrid long enough to have it done.
