Thoughts on my new guitar

Well I just bought the Alhambra 7Fc yesterday and had a pack of strings thrown in. La Bella 2001 Flamenco hard tension set to be exact. And here are some of my thoughts.

Guitar had OK volume and action. It felt good when I was playing it. But after changing to those strings.. ARGH! Nightmare!! The response seemed rather dead and slow. The strings felt really thick and had less brilliance. But the rasguedos sounded great so I'm still rather proud of my biggest purchase to date and I'm sure the whole solid body will age well as time goes by. But then again, it could simply be that the guitar had rather slow response and less brilliance to begin with. However, I was really happy with the guitar with the older set of strings.

Anyone had problems with La Bella strings or hard tension? I've tried another La Bella set with opaque trebles too and I find that brand rather stiff. I'll definitely try Savarez Reds after this horrible set. And then go back to D'Addarios Composites again, maybe their high tension Composites. Just a thought, why do you guys go for higher tension strings? What are the differences in tone, volume, response etc?

Cheston.

I do not play hard tension strings. I find that medium tension is enough tension, and very often sound more flamenco. I do not like LaBella for the exact same reasons as you say. Try a set of normal tension Daddario. Composites or not. You choose. They are more or less a standard set of strings, and then you can choose from that on.

Congratulations with your new guitar. I think you did the right choice and I hope that the guitar will give you plessure for many years to come

Cool, I have two friends w/ that guitar and I love using it in the juergas. When it is my turn to play I go for my friend's Alhambra if I can. After a few years the soundboard really broke in well (on both guitars), very punchy and flamenco sounding, great for rhythm. Pound some rumbas on it and it will break in faster.

I find some trebles are dull when you first put them on and after a few days they brighten up. I don't like La Bella 2001, but they do brighten up after a few days. If you like black trebles, try La Bella 850B, very flamenco sounding and bright when you first put em on. For basses try the Savarez as you said, or Luthier 20. D addario hard tension is good on the basses too, not as tight as the La bella hard tension. I don't like Daddario trebles that much.
