Camel Bone

Hello,

I am pretty excited because I have just purchased a camel bone saddle blank. I want to try and make a new saddle for my guitar because it's a skill I want to have. The present saddle is fine, but I always wonder if I could go lower. I don't want to have to shim, so it seems logical to just make a new saddle and not touch the present one.

Does anyone have experience with camel bone? Also, I am probably going to be using sandpaper taped to a flat surface. I suppose I should wear some kind of mask because the dust is pretty bad?

Any advice input would be much appreciated!

uh oh, you didnt get yours from ebay, did you?

i did and mine is full of grease.

be sure your piece is completely free of grease or else it could destroy the guitar.

Hey,

I indeed bought it from ebay. I took a look at the pic in your post and I must say this bone I got is a dull white and feels pretty dry to the touch. No brown at all on it.

Should I be worried?

maybe send an email to the seller and ask if it has been properly degreased and if so, what process did he use?

i need a new saddle too, so let me know how it works out!

if you're still worried, you can always try degreasing it yourself just to be 100% sure.

Well Harry...only if doors start slamming in the middle of the night and plates and stuff start flying around the room...then get it thoroughly degreased and exorcised by a competent man of the cloth...

I have to say, I was waiting more for a camel joke of some kind. The door is wide open there!

Seriously though I will contact the seller, but since the bone is pretty much white all over and quite dry to the touch I am hoping everything is ok.

Most music stores should have stock of quality bone saddle blanks - failing that, Bob Colosi is awesome to deal with and if you want to get fancy he has some different materials such as fossilized walrus ivory:

I will keep you posted about this new saddle. I guess I may mess it up in which case I will just keep trying using that fret.com article there.

well.. honestly.. i think u shd get a professional to do it.. I bought some blanks and it's just crap to work with.. nothing like a professionally made one...

I'm usually trying to get my bone greased, not degreased. But if you have a greasy saddle bone, you can boil it in mild salt water and let it dry a few days.
