J. Ramírez I 1900 + Snos. Santos He...

Last week I´ve been at Siccas guitars in Karlsruhe/Germany to look around. They had a José Ramírez I from 1900 and a Sobrinos de Santos Hernández1982 ready to play. I´ve checked them both. The neck of the Ramirez played like 3/4 guitar. Its action about 8.5 to 9 mm is quite low for that time. A slightly singing sound.

I noticed the Snos. de Santos Hernández by its design. With its displaced soundhole it appeared a little bit eggy-like. I didn´t know it was a flamenca, because it had no golpeador. Mirco Sicca told me so, and it was made by Feliciano Bayón. Then I started to play. I really had some great names in my hands, but Hombre! I never played such a cannon firework!!! Even my 1969 Gerundino was just a milk shake compared to this one. Absolutely increadible! Full power at any fret and full of aggressive bite as I never ever heard it before. Really every single tone a monster shout blowing all away! Thinking about this guitar makes me still lifting up to another planet. For I couldn´t play regularly during the last weeks, I wasn´t able to play as clean as I´d like to. So I didn´t dare to make a soundfile.

Mirco took a photo me playing both guitars. You can see them on FB on 16 january:

Hi Bernd,

Last week I played a Sobrinos de Santos Hernandez, the sound was good, it was a very old one...
The only thing I did not like too much was the rather chubby D shape of the neck.
Now it is a thing you like or dislike and depends a lot of what you are used to, but how was it with the one you tried?

Peter.

Hi Peter, nice to read you :-)

The one I´ve played didn´t have such a chubby D shape. It felt ok, just like between a standard and a flattened D shape. My current Fernando Sánchez has a normal D shape. So the Snos d. S. Hernández felt clearly better.

The old ones sometimes have a chubby neck shape. Did you know who exactly built the guitar you´ve played?

I´ve been with a friend there who wants to buy my Sánchez. He was also very impressed by the Sons. d. S. H. If I had some buckets or a greatful spender, than this monster would have been mine for sure. But nothing against an old Gerundino ;-)

How is your Gerundino doing? Do you still have it?

Saludos
Bernd

The guitar was 1979 if I am correct. I think it was Bayon too.

The Gerundino I still have...:-) the sound is terrific, old school flamenco sound. It plays very nice, but it is a bit more difficult to control.
For playability and the "moderner" sound I prefer my Anders Negra. Very direct and pulsive. Allways a joy to play.

Yes, Anders´ negra is still a dream for me :-) It´s one of those babies I´d like to own. Maybe I should try my luck at the lottery :-))
