tremolo bass and melody

hello lads!

anything one should bare in mind when playing tremolo lines where the bass and the melody are all on the same string???

sometimes I get it and other times the thumb note just pops as I mute it with the followin index stroke.....

I guess the main prob is I have nowhere to put/anchor my thumb......I dont think its right to play a rest stroke on the string below and keep it there while I play the melody line on the string above....is it?
