Merengue de Cordoba bad technique?

Hi there guys, just was watching La guitarra flamenca de Merengue de Cordoba , his way of playing is very diff to what I have been exposed to via my teacher, youtube, other la guitarra series.

eg his alzapua used a very small movement of the thumb, hitting only the string after the initial note (on the lower string) and up movement only on the single string too
eg on a Em chord

another is his rasqs, free floating thumb, and no flicking of the fingers, just moving the fingers in small motions hitting the top 3 strings etc?
another is playing right on the soundhole etc

but on the introduction on the video/internet, he is the teacher of Vicente Amigo, Paco Serrano etc

why is his technique so different from Vincente or Serrano etc

well, i wouldn't use this DVD for learning technique but its good for learning all the different Cante forms and Palos. But yes, the technique is quite "oldschool". and as we all know, technique developed and changed a lot.

For copying and learning technique i would use other DVDs like from Gerardo, Chicuelo, etc.

So, for me , yes, i would say it is "bad" technique. but others might like that shrammmmm shrammmm rasg. sound.

Yes indeed. Merengues hands are stiff as a stick.. Like someones stuffed his wrists into liquid nitrogen for 10 minutes. I fear eyecancer watching him playing.... Maybe good to learn the basic chords for singing... but dont watch his techniques.

indeed, scary.

first time i saw this pic, i felt like he is asking me:

- "why didn't you practice enough today and watched some **** on TV instead?"

- "you don't even play perfectly in compas, and you want to learn my falsetas?"

and....

- "Andalusian Guitars are the best Guitars i have ever played and very sonorous with timbric colors. Why do you make fun of Ruben?"

Yeah, Merengue's "soft" technique is a bit strange, and not the best thing to emulate. Though his accompaniment book is a great resource.

I don't know that his technique is old school so much as it is simply "old". If you hear his stuff form back in the 70s, he sounds just like anyone else from that era. His technique is sharp and strong, the rasgeados are clear and clean, with none of the schramm schramm mushiness you see on those Encuentro vids.

I dunno, he's not that old, but maybe his hands are worn out now. Or maybe he feels like he paid his dues with sharp technique in the old days, and now only has the energy and will to play "retirement rasgeados".
