Recuerdos Played with Flamenco Tremolo

The thread "Tremolo practice, just flamenco or classical too?," to which I have added my thoughts, got me to thinking seriously about Recuerdos de la Alhambra played with a flamenco trmolo (piami). I have heard my flamenco guru and maestro in the Washington, DC area, Paco de Malaga, play Recuerdos incorporating the flamenco tremolo, and it sounded alright to me, although it is generally a bit slower because of the extra stroke. Nevertheless, I think most guitarists would consider the flamenco tremolo harder to master than the classical version, and I'm wondering if it might not be cool, different, and somewhat exotic to be able to play Recuerdos all the way through using the flamenco tremolo. Has anyone else thought about this, or better yet, has anyone else tried to learn Recuerdos using the flamenco tremolo? It would certainly set one apart from the classical crowd playing Recuerdos!

Cheers,

Bill

My personal opinion on this is not to do it.

Practice time is in limited supply for me. Right now the only material I want to practice now is stuff that will make me a better accompanist. The handful of solos I play are chosen based on me being able to use sections of the music for accompaniment. Re-learning Recuerdos with a 5-note tremolo would just steal valuable time from my practicing. That's why its not for me.

Recuerdos can be used as a prime example of just how
different classical and flamenco tremolo really are.

It just doesnt flow with flamenco tremolo. At least in my opinion.

Great to hear Paco De Malaga is still playing. I havent seen him in over 25
years. Wow, time flies.

Todd,

Paco would agree that Recuerdos should be played with classical tremolo. He played it with flamenco tremolo because I requested it. He said, however, that he used to play a version of Recuerdos incorporating both versions.

Paco is an excellent teacher-maestro and a wonderful source of knowledge about all things flamenco. If you knew him 25 years ago, I'm sure you will agree. He sold the Guitar Gallery a couple of years ago and continues to give private lessons out of his home. I've been studying flamenco guitar with him for about four years now. That he continues to keep me as a student is testimony to his unlimited patience!

Cheers,

Bill
