Looked like the Canadians were completely stressed out and fighting for dear life. I’m sure the players thought a certain amount of luck was involved in the win since both teams played exceptionally well.

I’m ambivalent about the loss since Crosby is the Pen's team captain and brought us the Stanley Cup in 2009. Congrats Canada—your ex-pats won the gold for you.

Now, CD, behave yourself, and apologize for that rude remark like a real Canadian!

Such crass displays of triumphalism are inappropriate at a time when, according to El País, Canada "not only won the games...but gave a lesson in humility, as only great ones do."

Grande hasta en la despedida

Estevan,

Nah man..for decades Canadian pipers have been walking away with top prizes in both Band and Solo Piping (much harder) in the annual competitions in Scotland.

They are not "foreigners"...but just "oor ain people gone awa"....

(I don't know why this story entered my head but I thought it would make you laugh Estevan)......

A few years ago, a big national newspaper "scoop" discovered and caused a sensation that the crews from the big Russian factory ships trawling around the North of Scotland had been coming ashore regularly on Friday and Saturday nights and going up to the pub in the small towns in the Highlands and Islands for the local Ceilidh (party with fiddles and dancing and plenty drink..) without any passport control or anything.

They just used to come in on a small crew-boat and tie up in a little inlet.

They had been doing so for years and years..even from the height of the Cold War!

So much so that all the locals knew them well and had followed their life stories and had seen several of them grow up from cabin-boy to Captain and had shared and delighted in their photographs of their marriages and then children back home in the USSR...just as the Russians had also attended various community births, deaths and marriages of their friends here in Scotland.

So much for British high security and MI6 and all that..

I love it!

cheers,

Ron

RE: GOLD!!!!!!!! FOR CANADA!!!! (in reply to cathulu

On the whole I’m felling pretty let down about my own Olympics viewing experience.

I was really looking forward to having it take place in my own time zone, getting to see some live events without having to stay up till/wake up at five in the morning. I was really jazzed to see women’s curling, ski jumping, and men’s hockey. My buzz was seriously harshed when, on day one, I changed the channel to get away from the execrable Bob Costas, only to be slapped in the face with the harsh reality that there was absolutely NO coverage on CBUT, the CBC channel that I am very fortunate to get due to living close to the border. It was all downhill from there.

I never really saw much of what I was looking forward to, and NBC’s primetime repackaging was lame and confusing. I did see the curling final, but that was just a bummer to see Canada lose like that. I totally missed out on the ski jumping except for a bit of a preliminary. The hockey final was a nail-biter, but it really, really sucked seeing a game of that magnitude, played on Canadian soil, outside the context of a Ron and Don broadcast. It was just plain wrong. NBC did throw us a very small bone by showing a super brief clip of Don talking about the game just before its start, but that was it.

I don’t know how the CTV (or whatever it was) coverage was up north, but down here the whole thing was pretty lame.

Gonna have to wait for the World Cup for a satisfying global sports fix, and the usual staying up till/getting up at five in the morning…..

So it's true - that's great! There's a sub-plot in one of my favourite films, 'Local Hero', involving the captain of a Russian trawler who makes regular visits to a Scottish village, has investments that are managed by the local innkeeper, and sings at the ceilidh. He's one of the community. (Some of it was filmed just up the road from you).

Just goes to show that ideologies that are used to divide people into hostile factions are a load of BS. This was the main thing that struck me when travelling behind the 'Iron Curtain' in my yoof, (or anywhere else, for that matter) - wherever you go, people are just people trying to get along in life.

I agree Estevan,

I've spoken with a number of local guys with oil experience who went to work over in Russia on the trans-Siberian pipeline etc...and they've told me stories about Russian colleagues inviting them back to their villages when they got their time off and meeting their families and having parties etc.

I travelled quite a lot (when I was younger) and had similar experiences and found ordinary folk to have basically the same human values...regardless of place.

I have always been a great enthusiast of Radio Broadcasting all my life.
Last week on the BBC there was a great programme on the golden days of American Radio in the 40's to 50's with fantastic excerpts from "Armchair Theatre" etc.. Magic stuff!!

I have always been inspired by the inscription carved on the insignia above the door of the old BBC headquarters in the Strand in London, which reads..
"Nation shall speak Peace unto Nation".

And that's the pleasure I get from speaking to all the folk here, from all corners of the World who have a common interest (as well as common sense) and who refuse to align themselves with the national stereotypes their Governments would wish them to adopt.

(Mind you...we do get nutters too.. )

cheers,

Ron

Sid played his first home game last night since the Olympics. Before it started silver medalists from the home and opposing teams were honored. The goalie from the opposing team won silver for the US and was MVP--he got a standing ovation. When the announcers got to Sid the crowd booed. It has to be pretty rare that a home team captain gets booed by his own fans like this. An interesting moment in sports history...
