palmas, and dynamics 

i just wanted to open a discussion about palmas, and the use of dynamics within flamenco.

i am a beginner, and a big part of my daily routine, is listening very carefully to flamecno music (usually cante albums) and listening for the dynamics. things like when the palmas are getting louder or quiet, and for the use of contra at the end of a letra, or where it will be quiet for a falsetta or foot solo

i am focussed on bulerias at the moment, and spending a little bit of time with tangos. im learning a few things from other palos, but mainly for technique excersizes.

ive been learning about palmas at florians classes, and practice palmas and contra a lot while listening to flamenco, i really think focussing on this stuff is a great idea for the beginner

i wanted to leave this open for other people to leave their thoughts on the topic

it's the same for me, i'm very interested too in this topic since i work with a dancer/singer - last week we did practice palmas at the end of our session for an hour or so. i really need a warm up of 10 minutes to get in the mood, but after 20 more minutes of contras things become really posh and it's loads of fun btw, especially when you alternate contras with the second person and when ready for speed up.
we did a warm up like this:

Palmas 1: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12+ + + + + + + + + + + + 12 1 2 3 etc.
Palmas 2: _+ + + + + + + + + + +12 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 + + + + etc.

Ricardo and Salva's short Palmas intro on Pepe Habichuelas encuentro buleria video is way cool, check it out if you can, i also recomand "el compas de los Zambos" (Luis Zambo and friends) for buleria palmas

it is very fun practicing palmas, and it is so important for us to understand how they work.

in jerez and elsewhere in spain, you learn palmas in a juerga and everyone is doing a metronomic beat. If you are not in that environment, you need to practice this stuff with a metronome. Practice extreme dynamics, super loud to almost in audible, but most important is the steady tempo reference. If you clap loud, smack on the beat, you should not be able to hear the metronome tick at all.

thanks ricardo, thats good advice, sort of like when practicing guitar to a metronome, you want to bury the click
