Decision of the Day

I just had a gig and broke my M nail...its hanging on by a litlle corner...

my dilemma is i wanna record the alegrias and there will be some falsetas oportunityes and maybe some picado from what i hear in the track...there spaces to fill

but i never put glue on my nails...do i tear whats left (there will be no nail to hitt the string cause it broke very deep) and file down the rest of my hand to match it...

or ...do i glue it ...and glue everything else to match it ...will it stay ....will i regred doing so cause it feels so weird to me lol

i been sitting here for an hour messing around on facebook cause i dont wanna make a decision...but i need too... cause i am waisting time i could be practicing or doing something productive

I don't really have much experience with this, but I recently tore my index nail down to the flesh line. I tried to glue it up with 2 layers of glue, but it broke within 15 mins of playing. All I have protruding over the end is a tiny bit of nail in the corner. If I angle my finger when playing I can still get a bit of naily sound.

Hmm, so I failed to make a point in this post. What I meant to highlight was that glue might not be perfect for a repair job, especially if the tear is big. I found it to be too brittle when dry to hold the two edges of the tear together.

Other forum members recommended I try it as a preventative measure in the future though.

thanks mate...

after writting this i made a decision to do something lol

so i glued it with 2 layers of tissue paper on top and more glue on top of the paper...( glue - tissue paper, glue tissue paper and glue on top )

gona file it down to minimum ...and hope...see what happens

Good luck with the repair. Would be good if you could post the results of this experiment too. Might be quite handy to know if this technique works or not.

I did as well, but its was my index', on friday. 10 well spent US Dollars at the beauty-salon (along with the usual few minutes of embarrassment under the more genuine patrons’ conceited gaze) and it is "new and improved" !!

All they do is [super]glue the nail; however, they also add and glue a thin silk screen on the nail which may serve to reinforce the restored nail.

For me, this perpetual saga of the fingernails has been the most frustrating thing in music, and has driven me to the brink of existential crisis on more than one occasion. It has impelled me to consider quit playing nylon-string altogether and, once, after 20 years I did file off my nails "for good!" Nothing has caused me more angst, ennui, and dread than my freakin fingernails. I came to the conclusion that playing nylon-string guitar (with its requisite meticulous fingernails) is simply NOT a good thing for those apt to OCD-type behavior (and a tenuous existential countenance).

Nothing signifies the great paradox more than the fastidious musician who employs a sloughing part of the anatomy for nothing less than the fundamental attack of his instrument, yet this fickle cellulous seems to tear, nick, or chip as readily as the morning dew, no matter how meticulous we care.

I like to be zen about about things...but clearly this is an evil trick.

lol its funny earlyer today i remembered that i said i would come in and let you know how the nail held up...was gonna say brilliant, perfect record !! and it has held up brilliant

classes for dancers every night...without microphone...

practices etc... not a problem

but then i had my tapas gig tonight...it broke in the last note of the last number of the night lol...i did play pretty hard...

...but the nail didnt brake...the hardened glue and tissue flew clean off up into the air lol

so now i have to do the same thing tomarow...but its worked brilliantly
and the nail was really broken in a pretty unrepairable spot..and i havent done anything since last sunday to it...i could have applied another coat of glue

so its a pretty good emergency fix...u can bassically do as many coats as you feel confident with ...on this time i did..

1 Glue
2 Tissue
3 Glue
4 Tissue
5 Glue

i dont like it very thick but its up to you to decide how think and secure u want it

i did brake another nail but thays besides the point

hey flo, glad it worked out for you.

that's funny that you broke it on the last note. that's the flamenco equivalent of a rockstar smashing his guitar at the end of the last song.

did you have any problem with rasgueados with this method? i found that the tissue always came off really fast with some hard rasgueados.

no not at all i do is hard rasqueados for dancers all day long for classes and even more so for the gig...

i think after about a week u should think about reinforcing it or if u see it coming unstuck in places take it off and do a fresh one..

i think because of showers...etc. water getting in there...it weakens after about a week ...sometimes not..i remember when i used to do it all the time years ago lasting me for weeks and weeks at the time...i could have just been unlucky and not filled it proprelly and left unsmooth edges and the string got caught right in that section and it pulled it off...infact its what i think happened because it came clean off

it was a rushed job...like Randal i hate doing those things too...try to get it over with asap...infact i hate threads about nails and strings LOL i cant belive u guys acctualy read this lol...but i guess if anyone new to this is not sure how to do a quick fix it might help...i guess
