Proposal

Well, much to my surprise, it seems quite a few people really are offended by off-topic posts here in the flamenco section. Some of Romerito's "Necroposting" have revealed a lot of grudges and motivations of which I was not aware. Myself, I enjoy the banter and fun conversation, but perhaps it really is a damaging thing. We have lot quite a few valuable posters over the years--who knows if it is because of this sort of thing or maybe because they have just moved on to other interests?

In any case, I want to propose that certain people who tend to throw a lot of jokes and off-topic things into threads, voluntarily tone it down for awhile and see what happens. Maybe a month or so...see if the forum becomes a better place. If not, we can always go back to posting monkey pictures or pictures of our girlfriends or whatever.

The people I am asking to submit to this exercise in restraint are, in no particular order: myself, Florian, koella, dominic, Ron, Deniz, and others who know who they are, of course. Let's just try to keep this area on-topic for awhile and see what happens. I also propose we keep the Off-Topic section busy and full of fun and monkey pictures. The other side of this is that the people who are always complaining about it, should contribute their knowledge and experiences instead of lurking and only posting when something offends them. That only seems fair to me.

I think we owe it to Simon to keep this place worth coming to. Otherwise we might as well all to go back to flamenco-teacher.com.

Good one Miguel.

I like the idea of using the off topic section some more, because thats what its for.

Since I have been one of those who has dicussed these topics the most, I will stop for now and concentrate on things I like on this forum, and there are many.

I support any proposal that allows for monkey pics.

Ok I'm in too.
Yeah let's have more audio uploads and tabs.

If I may add another suggestion. No more youtube links on the audio video section.

I support any suggestions aimed at keeping this forum a top place to be.

I have a question for Koella and Anders: Where would you like to see youtube links posted? I've been guilty of putting a lot of links in the A/V section. I'll gladly direct them somewhere else.

-Jake.

I thought about that. Off topic doesn't seem the right place. Maybe somewhere in " > usefull stuff" ?

Members' A/V Uploads

External A/V Links

But it won't matter where things are linked/uploaded. It's the way people respond to the links (and each other) that is the problem.

Some people don't sugar-coat their criticism at all, figuring that because it's constructive that's enough.
Some people are more sensitive to criticsm than they realise or will admit.

Other people feel the need to criticise materials linked externally rather harshly or with derision or condescension. Remember the little Asian girl who was a monster on her classical guitar?
This is a flamenco forum, not a classical guitar forum, yet some people felt it necessary to state the obvious that classical wasn't their cup of tea. Others critised her rasgeo - despite the fact that the techniqes they believe to be superior were not a part of classical technique.

As very few people here are probably concert level or full time professional musicians, you can see how someone would refer to the forum critics as being closet or armchair musicians - and even that was phrased poorly enough to offend many an ego.

I was taught to appreciate skill and effort even in things I don't like and if I couldn't, to at least be respectful. But everyone has different levels of educacion, I suppose.

It's a good idea. I browse the posts by hitting the todays post links. I almost never browse by the uploads/off topic etc menu. Posters will have to be mindful of where the post originated before submitting a reply.

RE: Proposal (in reply to Gummy

I got another suggestion, that we all upload a photo of ourselfs for the avators because its alot harder to be rude and insulting when you see the persons face just like in real life.

its alot eazyer to do it to a avator of mickey mouse but seeing someones face would make u think twice about it.

kind of reminds u that is real people with real feelings u dealing with and not just a name on a forum.
