Summer madness

It still hasnt cooled down yet in Andalucia and so its agood job there are a lot of all night flamenco festivals happening. Last night (saturday 5th) was a full moon and a perfect night for an outdoor concert.

It just so happened that there were a lot of flamenco gigs including 3 major flamenco festivals happening at the same time last night in Andalucia so we were spoilt for choice. In Jerez de la frontera bullring was the Fiesta de la Buleria dedicated to manuel parrilla (which i would really have liked to have gone to) I dont know if Norman went but if you did go Norman, could you post a report? The line up wa El farru, Jesus mendez, Familia parrilla, Manuel Moneo, Diego Carrasco, Miguel salado, Remedios Amaya and David de Maria junior.

In Ecija (seville) was the 33rd noche de cante flamenco with Miguel Poveda, Alvaro diaz Casrellán, Chicuelo, el niño Elias and Antonio el Pipa

In the tiny coastal village of Algarrobo near nerja was Bonelo hijo and la Macanita

However Mairena de Alcor was having their festival de cante jondo featuring Calixto Sanchez, Jose Menese, Aurora Vargas, Carmen Linares, Antonio Carrion, Manolo franco, Enrique de Melchor, Diego Amaya and Salvador gutierrez, Javier Barón, Fernando de la Morena, Manuela Mendez, El Zambo, La tia Curra, El Bo, Dieguito de Margara, Diego Morao and moraito Chico....I cant believe I couldnt go to that.

So when I was asked if I wanted to go to flamenco festival in a tiny village just outside of Granada I thought "well there cant be any artists left to see".

However I took uo the invitation and and after a short car journey i was taken to the town of Ogijares, a sleepy village on the outskirts of Granada city, the last place anyone would expect to see a major festival.

In the centre of the town is a feria ground almost as big as the town itself where a large stage and sound sytem had been very well set up.
The show was supposed to start at 10.30 but as usual it was nearly 11.00 by the time anyone got on stage. The show opened an announcer introducing the 30th festival de cante in Ogijares with Ramon de Paso and Carlos Zarate performing some very old school malagueña and granaina. Diego Clavel and El chuchillas followed but again it was very old school and really the first 2 acts were warming up the real show. A little after midnight and I was delighted to see and hear Maite Martin for the first time live. She has an amazing voice and a unique interpretation. She finished with the buleria "ten cuidao" and I was very impressed by her performance.

Next up came Granadas own Patricia Guerrero and her group including guitarist David Carmona (habichuela). Patricia is only 20 years old and has already won major prizes for dance in Spain. She has everything, amazing footwork, beautiful body line and can do endless spins and turns in compas.
I am going to predict that in 5 years she will be as well known as Eva hierbabuena.....you read it here first

It was now nearly 1.30 in the morning and everyone ran to the beer tent for a cool refreshment. At 2.00 the concert started again with Marina Heredia who sang well but stuck to popular bulerias and Tango del Albaicin and for me was not nearly as interesting as the Maite Martin performance. However she is a true Andalucian beauty and in my opinion her image should be used by the Spanish tourist board.

It was now 3.00 am, I was well into my ?th beer and waiting the final artist. I couldnt have asked to see better than Arcangel and Miguel Angel Cortes. Arcangel opened with a Martinete that nearly made my skin fall off. It was so painfully beautiful, powerful and clean. Miguel Angel played a beautiful accompaniment por siguirillas which sounded almost indian. Later was some fandangos, buleria and a fin de fiesta with everyone back on stage.
By 4.00 pm I had seen enough and got back to the car just before the mad rush out of the village. Next festival is noche del Albaicin on 18thseptember....lots of Habichuelas, Mayas and Heredias. see you there!

Cool, I love it - wish they had had more in the villages around Granada when I was there. Anything else happening in the Granada area in the next couple of days; got a couple of friends staying at my house in El Valle de Lecrin?

Hi Mark, great blow-by-blow coverage, with good photos! Sounds like you had a very good time. I know what you mean about the recent full moon and the late-summer nights. Shortly after I saw you guys in Sanlúcar, I was laid up for a while and missed a lot of events (the Viernes Flamencos and a few other things here in Jerez), but I've been back on my feet for the last week or so, and there have been some really nice evenings. I almost went to the Bulería last night with some friends, but we decided against it in the end. The last time I was there was two or three years ago, when it was held at the Chapín stadium, and it was so packed full of people that you had to wait over half an hour every time you wanted a drink or went to the toilets. Very inconvenient. Last night's Bulería was held at the bullring; I don't know if it was a different story.

Great reporting, man!
