Recuerdos de España...

Lately I've been missing Andalucia so much and dying to go back...it was like a relationship that ended too soon and a piece of my heart was ripped out when that plane left the ground from Sevilla. I'm sure everyone here who has been there knows what I'm talking about...so what are the little memories that you all have of that keep sticking in your mind?

For me...Tostada con jamon and a cafe solo for breakfast at Piola on the Alameda (anyone know that place?), having to take 3-minute showers before the hot water ran out, people practically getting it on in the middle of the day in smoke filled cafes, hearing palmas and spontaneous cante in the street, trying to communicate with locals, people's sense of humor, solitude and graffiti along the Guadalquivir, walking the streets day and night, CHEAP wine, horrible beer (Cruzcampo), of course the Flamenco shows, juergas, lessons, peñas etc. I could go on...

Over to you all.

for me, its the amazing seafood tapas at casa balbino in sanlucar, the pedro ximinez sherry, solommillo de ternera al jerez, sittining out on the chairs in plaza del arenal, tinto de verano, feeling warmth of the sun on your skin in the early morning, buying loads of good fruit at very cheap prices.

the slower pace of life, siestas in the afternoon...

i know the feeling.

I miss the banging and clanging of plates in cafeterias and the strong, but smooth coffee and the smell on the street of freshly baking pastry and churros wafting around, combined with the odd whiff of drains and Ducados....the dank smell of the Madrid metro, where you would buy a ticket at 1 peseta to go practically anywhere....and the fact that you could do a half-hour's walk home from a Flamenco club at 4 in the morning, through the city centre, while the street cleaners hosed and brushed down the streets, with never a thought of getting mugged or any harm coming to you, but just contemplating what you had heard that night...

That was Madrid for me in the 70's anyway.

I've had later experiences in other parts, but I've got a soft-spot for Madrid, I must confess.

cheers,

Ron

After tearing myself away after three years, my list is way too long.

But some things really pissed me off and I do not miss them for one moment - most ex-pats down there are eternally making excuses for these aspects and they usually up where they started i.e. "the weather". Sheesh, summers are very, very painful and that's without the tacky fiestas.

As I said, the good things make up a much longer list.
